CIF's Thom Simmons speaks on 'athletically motivated transfer' on Southern Section Sitdown
Thom Simmons, the CIF Southern Section assistant commissioner, spoke about the misconception regarding the 'motivate athletically transfer' rule.
"It doesn't exist," Simmons said on the CIF Southern Section Sitdown.
Simmons recalls a revamping of the transfer rule as it pertains to the valid residential change and hardship, noting "the very first thing we took out was athletically motivated transfers".
"The only thing with regard to athletically motivated transfers that still exists is if your follow a coach within 24 months," Simmons said.

Simmons speaks further on how difficult it was to prove an athletically motivated transfer -- bottom line being -- you couldn't.
"That was one of the reasons why we got rid of the bylaw because if you would've just kept your mouth shut, you could never be in violation of the bylaw," Simmons said.
A student-athlete, coach or parent would need to go on the record admitting the move was for athletic purposes.
"It didn't make sense to institute a bylaw that you couldn't win," Simmons added.
