Caleb Sanchez' six touchdown passes offset the five-TD rushing performance by Cornell Hatcher; Last-second two-point conversion is thwarted in Southern Section D1 semifinal

There was a fireworks display immediately following St. John Bosco's wild 43-42 Southern Section Division I semifinal win Friday over Corona Centennial

Frankly, it barely did justice to the the play and back-and-forth action on the field.

Caleb Sanchez' sixth touchdown pass of the game, a 4-yarder to Tommy Mahler gave Bosco (11-1) a 43-36 lead with 3:30 remaining. But Centennial, as it did all night, drove right down the field behind Cornell Hatcher Jr. (46 carries, 212 yards, five touchdowns).

His fifth TD came on a 1-yard plunge with eight seconds left, to cut the lead to 43-42. The Huskies (9-3) went for the win, but quarterback Husan Longstreet (326 total yards) faked a handoff to Hatcher, slipped slightly and was swarmed over and sacked to apparently give Bosco the win.

Not so fast.

Aided by a 15-yard penalty on Bosco for over-celebration, Centennial moved up 15 yards on the kickoff and recovered a perfectly executed onside kick. Longstreet had a pass deflected on first down and on second down from Bosco's 41, he was sacked again, setting off a wild celebration and then the fireworks.

There was some question whether Longstreet actually went down, which will no doubt add another chapter to this dramatic semifinal win.
