Look: Pittsburg beats San Ramon Valley in North Coast D1 football championship
It took a national record to break San Ramon Valley's proverbial back.
A 99-yard touchdown bomb from Marley Alcantara to a streaking Bobby Shaw III broke a 14-14 tie early in the third quarter Friday at Dublin High School and Pittsburg would never relinquish the lead in a wildly entertaining 37-21 victory for the North Coast Section Division 1 championship.
The touchdown play, of course, ties the national record. Nobody knows how many times it's been pulled off, but nobody on Pittsburg was counting.
The Pirates just know they won their third straight D1 championship in a row and seventh overall. The video and slideshow at the top of the page is worth a good watch. San Ramon Valley's Luke Baker, who accounted for nearly 8,000 yards and 93 touchdowns in his brilliant career was at times, brilliant.
Teammate Marco Jones, who many believe pound-for-pound, is the best all-around player in the Bay Area. The 6-2, 225-pound junior fullback and linebacker, had a 39-yard pick that gave the Wolves hope in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to 24-21.
But Pittsburg had stars abound, led by Jamar Searcy, a junior running back who rushed for three touchdowns, including a 34-yarder that put the game away in the final three minutes. He also forced a fumble and had an interception.
Alcantara threw for more than 300 yards, and four-star junior defenders, cornerback Jadyn Hudson (interception) and Jewelous Walls (sack) had big games. Read more from the game below.
