Look: De La Salle coach Justin Alumaugh's emotional tribute, perspective at end of long, trying season
MISSION VIEJO, CALIFORNIA — It's a long season, especially after a 7-hour bus ride that eventually ends with a season-ending loss.
But loss is relative.
De La Salle's football team endured a 27-14 defeat in the finals of the CIF Division 1-AA Bowl Championships to Mission Viejo late Friday night.
The Spartans (11-3), winners of 11 straight, raced to a 7-0 lead thanks to the speedy legs and feet of junior quarterback Toa Faavae, who sprinted 55 yards for a score on the game's first possession.
But Mission Viejo (13-3), with more depth, more athletes and versatility, wore down De La Salle, scoring the next 24 points and took control by late in the third quarter.
Afterward, a somber De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh praised his team, praised his opponent, credited all the correct parties, but clearly he was drained.
De La Salle playing with more spirit — Steve Jacoby's spirit — heading into California football state championship vs. Mission Viejo
In one of the most eloquent, honest and heart-felt 2-minute and 20 second sound bytes one could muster, Alumbaugh revealed the love, affection and appreciation he had for his 2023 Spartans, who "double downed," on the principals of a storied program known for its winning and championships, following a midseason loss beyond the scoreboard.
Immensely popular defensive line coach Steve Jacoby died suddenly and un-expectantly on Oct. 19 — a true, gut-wrenching, sorrowful loss — that somehow didn't set the team back, but drove them forward.
Alumbaugh and staff naturally nurtured and protected their players, at the same time trying to mourn the loss of their own very good friend. Alumbaugh revealed late Friday night how his players, their efforts and love for their late coach, helped him in the healing process.
Listen and watch the interview above, especially the last portion. It's another lesson how team and sport elevates well beyond the rules, boundaries and scoreboards of the the game.
