Top 10 San Diego Section high school boys basketball rankings (2/5/2024)

Montgomery's win over Torrey Pines has kept the Aztecs alive in their hunt for the top seed in the Open Division

Here's an updated look at the San Diego Section rankings heading into the final week of the regular season.

SBLive’s San Diego Section high school boys basketball rankings are compiled by SBLive California reporter Bodie DeSilva and will be released each week throughout the 2023-24 season.

1. Carlsbad (24-2)

Next game: 2/6 vs. Sage Creek

Last week: 1

Carlsbad moved to 8-0 in the North County Coastal League, beating La Costa Canyon and San Dieguito at home last week. They'll host Sage Creek on Tuesday before closing out the regular season at El Camino. The Lancers are locked into a top-two seed in the Open Division playoffs.

2. Montgomery (23-2)

Next game: 2/5 vs. Hilltop

Last week: 2

Montgomery has won 10 straight games, holding every opponent to 47 points or less during that stretch. They held Torrey Pines to 19 points in Saturday's win, boosting their chances to grab the top seed in the Open Division when brackets are released on Saturday.

3. St. Augustine (22-4)

Next game: 2/6 vs. Mission Bay

Last week: 3

The Saints took down rival Cathedral Catholic on Friday and will host Mission Bay and San Diego to close out the regular season. The Saints are two games from a third straight undefeated Western League title.

4. Torrey Pines (19-7)

Next game: 2/6 at El Camino

Last week: 4

The Falcons beat San Dieguito and Sage Creek at home but were limited offensively in Saturday's 48-19 loss to Montgomery. They'll close out the regular season with trips to El Camino and La Costa Canyon while trying to hold on to the four-seed in the Open Division bracket.

5. La Jolla Country Day (21-5)

Next game: 2/9 at Bishop's

Last week: 5

The Torreys have won 10 of 11 games and wrap up the regular season at Bishop's on Friday. La Jolla Country Day dropped behind La Costa Canyon in the latest playoff rankings and could use a loss by the Mavericks this week to reclaim the five-seed.

6. La Costa Canyon (18-6)

Next game: 2/6 at San Dieguito Academy

Last week: 6

The Mavericks split their league games against Carlsbad and El Camino last week and erased a halftime deficit to take down Santa Fe Christian on Saturday. Games against San Dieguito and Torrey Pines are left before playoffs.

7. Santa Fe Christian (18-8)

Next game: 2/6 at Bishop's

Last week: 7

The Eagles beat Maranatha Christian and Foothills Christian before falling to La Costa Canyon at Saturday's Battle at the Bay. They'll head to Bishop's and Francis Parker this week while trying to keep pace with La Jolla Country Day in the league standings.

8. Mission Hills (20-6)

Next game: 2/7 at Del Norte

Last week: 8

The Grizzlies handled Rancho Bernardo and Poway last week, moving to 8-0 in the Palomar League. Mission Hills, who has not lost since December 19, will close out the regular season with games against Del Norte and San Marcos.

9. Rancho Buena Vista (20-6)

Next game: 2/6 at Mt. Carmel

Last week: 9

Rancho Buena Vista will finish up their non-league slate with a trip to Mt. Carmel on Tuesday before heading to rival Vista on Friday looking to close out an unbeaten league title. The Longhorns have a firm grip on the top-seed in the Division 2 playoffs.

10. Cathedral Catholic (17-8)

Next game: 2/6 vs. Victory Christian Academy

Last week: 10

The Dons beat San Diego before falling to rival St. Augustine on Friday. They'll host Victory Christian in a non-league battle Tuesday before closing out the Western League at Madison. Cathedral Catholic currently sits just outside the Open Division playoffs with a week left to play.
