FINAL

Carlsbad 75, St. Pius X 72 (Overtime)

30 wins on the season, including 20 straight since late December, the Carlsbad boys basketball season rolls on.

Carlsbad, behind 21 points from star junior guard Jake Hall, erased a 12-point deficit to defeat St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy 75-72 in the opening round of the CIF State Open Division playoffs.

St. Pius X led 20-13 after one quarter and stretched the lead to as many as 10 in the second quarter before a Carlsbad run cut the halftime deficit to 36-33.

The Warriors got off to a quick start in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 12 at one point before Carlsbad worked their way back. St. Pius X senior forward Tyrone Riley drove to his left as the third quarter clock ticked down and laid the ball in just before the buzzer to give the Warriors a 54-47 lead after 24 minutes.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the fourth quarter before Carlsbad worked closer in the final minutes. Trailing 66-63 with 34 seconds left to play, Carlsbad's Tony Duckett rose up and nailed a 3-pointer from straight away to tie the game.

St. Pius X fumbled the ball out of bounds on the ensuing possession, giving Carlsbad a chance to win it. Duckett, who finished with 17 points, missed an elbow jumper with four seconds left. St. Pius X guard David Mack's attempt from half court missed left, sending the game to overtime.

Carlsbad junior Jett Kenady broke the seal in overtime with a 3-pointer. The Lancers built a five-point lead in the extra period but got sloppy with the ball, allowing St. Pius X to hang around.

Trailing 73-72 with 30 seconds remaining, St. Pius X committed a backcourt violation to give possession back to the Lancers. Following a timeout, Pepperdine-signee Jael Martin broke free and slammed home a dunk to give Carlsbad a three-point lead with 15 seconds left.

The Lancers chose to not foul on the final possession and played suffocating defense, leading to a desperation heave from St. Pius X senior guard David Mack that hit the top of the backboard as time expired.

Martin scored eight points in the fourth quarter and overtime, finishing the game with 16 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

San Francisco-signee Tyrone Riley led the Warriors with 26 points and 12 rebounds in his final high school game.

Carlsbad (30-2) will hit the road Saturday for a trip to top-seeded Harvard-Westlake. The Lancers opened their 2023-24 season against the Wolverines in November, losing 83-44 to the reigning Open Division state champions.
