CIF State basketball playoffs: Cleveland, Chatsworth set for All-City Section regional final (3/2/2024)
The stage is set for an All-City Section regional final.
Cleveland will take on Chatsworth in the Southern California Division IV regional final on Tuesday at Chatsworth, which means the Los Angeles City Section is guaranteed representation at the CIF State basketball championships on March 8-9 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
It will be the first time the City has had a boys basketball team in a CIF State final since Venice High in 2022. The City hasn't had a winner since View Park won a Division IV title in 2018.
Cleveland defeated Mission College Prep of San Luis Obispo 55-42 thanks to 15 points from Cayden Kelly. Kelly scored 12 points in the second half, anchored by a Cavs 15-0 run to start the third quarter.
Chatsworth took down Washington Prep 74-69. Alijah Arenas had 53 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
Cleveland beat Chatsworth twice already this season.
Harvard-Westlake and Eastvale Roosevelt will have a rematch of the CIF Southern Section Open Division final for a chance to play in the CIF State Open Division final.
Harvard-Westlake edged Carlsbad 73-72 led by 40 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Trent Perry. The Wolverines trailed double-digits in the first half. Perry was 13 of 13 from the free throw line.
Roosevelt topped Santa Maria St. Joseph 58-4. Brayden Burries scored 28 points.
The regional final will be played at Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday.
St. John Bosco 63, Damien 59: Brandon McCoy had 25 points for the Braves.
Mater Dei 79, Notre Dame 71: Brandon Benjamin led the Monarchs with 23 points. Mercy Miller had 29 points for the Knights.
Mater Dei will play at St. John Bosco Tuesday for a third time this season. Mater Dei won both games.
Heritage Christian 83, Bakersfield Christian 63: Dillan Shaw had 25 and Tae Simmons added 18 in the Warriors win. Bentley Waller had 30 for Bakersfield Christian.
Heritage Christian will host Bakersfield Centennial in the regional final on Tuesday. Centennial defeated King/Drew 76-71.
The regional final in Division III will be a rematch, too.
Alemany defeated University City 68-55 and Bosco Tech topped San Marcos 79-60.
Verdugo Hills could be another City Section team that earns a trip to Sacramento after defeating Buckley 74-57. North Bakersfield High beat San Pedro 54-47.
Verdugo Hills will host North in the regional final Tuesday.
