CIF State basketball championships: Top stars, best performances on day one (3/8/2024)
The 2024 CIF State basketball championships got underway on Friday from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. Six titles were decided with six more to be played on Saturday.
Here’s a quick look at some of the top stars and memorable performances from the first day of the CIF State basketball championships.
Daijha Teague, Oakland: Teague opened the day with 15 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks, two steals in a win over Montgomery.
Paula Zumstein, Montgomery: Zumstein had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds in a 56-50 loss to Oakland.
Evan Lucas, Athenian: Senior captain Evan Lucas had 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to capture a CIF State title.
Jabez Agustin, Verdugo Hills: Agustin finished with 15 points in a loss to Athenian, knocking down five of his 11 3-point attempts.
GRANADA HILLS CHARTER vs. CARUTHERS
Emmi Almeida, Caruthers: Almeida had 21 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the win over Granada Hills Charter.
Karma Paez, Granada Hills Charter: Paez had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists before fouling out in final minute.
Michael Lindsay, Alemany: Lindsay, who will play football at Idaho State next season, had 25 points (9-15) and grabbed down five rebounds against Santa Cruz.
DeMarco Hunter, Santa Cruz: Hunter, a sophomore, had 22 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort against Alemany.
BISHOP MONTGOMERY vs. BISHOP O’DOWD
Jordin Blackmon, Bishop Montgomery: Blackmon finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two assists despite sitting for nearly half the game due to foul trouble.
Cyriah Coleman, Bishop Montgomery: Coleman posted a nearly identical line to Blackmon, finishing with 14 points, six rebounds and two assists.
Jayla Stokes, Bishop O'Dowd: Stokes led O'Dowd with 11 points and had six rebounds in the loss to Bishop Montgomery.
ST. JOHN BOSCO vs. SAN RAMON VALLEY
Brandon McCoy, St. John Bosco: McCoy, the nation's top sophomore recruit according to 247Sports, had 18 points on 8-11 shooting and led the Braves with eight rebounds in the victory.
Jack Turner, St. John Bosco: Turner, a Loyola Chicago-signee, led the Braves with 20 points, adding four rebounds and four assists.
Luke Isaak, San Ramon Valley: Isaak led the Wolves with 18 points and added three rebounds and three assists in the loss to St. John Bosco.
