St. Bernard’s girls wins first CIF California basketball state championship

Huge double-doubles from Madelyn Shanahan, Laila Florvilus and Samantha Sundbuerg lead the Crusaders to 47-29 Division 4 championship at the Golden 1 Center.

SACRAMENTO — It's been a long and winding road for the St. Bernard's Highlanders girls basketball team. 

It ended Saturday at the Golden 1 Center, home of the NBA Sacramento Kings, with the ultimate.

Madelyn Shanahan had 15 points and 16 rebounds, Laila Florvilus (18 points, 14 rebounds) and Samantha Sundberg (12, 12), leading the Highlanders (30-5) to their first state championship.with a 47-29 win over Grossmont.

St. Bernard's, from Eureka at the Northern most part of the state, had two regional games delayed by winter storms. 

More than 800 miles South, the Foothillers (27-9) were led by Keilan Hayden (10 points) and a combined 17 from Aakash Price and Amethyst Price. .

PREGAME

The 2024 California (CIF) boys and girls high school basketball state championships have arrived. All 12 state championship games will be played at Golden 1 Center, the home of the Sacramento Kings.

The CIF State championship games continue Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Division III boys basketball matchup between Grossmont and St. Bernard's

St. Bernard's 35, Grossmont 27 (4:30): A 3-point play by Hayden cuts lead to eight. Grossmont pressure really hurting St. Bernard's. 

3RD QUARTER UPDATES

St. Bernard's 33, Grossmont 20 (end of 3): As bas as SB has shot (8 of 48), still in game. 

St. Bernard's 31, Grossmont 16 (3:29): Shanahan and Samanta Sundberg each approaching double doubles. 

2ND QUARTER UPDATES

St. Bernard's 23, Grossmont 12 (Halftime): Madelyn Shanahan with nine points and 11 rebounds and Samantha Sundberg eight points and seven rebounds for St. Bernard's. Nobody has more than 5 for Grossmont, which has 13 turnovers and made just 4 of 28 shots. Tough 10 a.m. start. 

St. Bernard's 19, Grossmont 10: The Crusaders in the middle of 11-2 run. Sundberg up to eight points and six rebounders.
