Watch: Granite Hills shuts out Cathedral Catholic, secures win No. 500 for coach James Davis
SAN DIEGO - Granite Hills picked up their fifth win of the season on Wednesday afternoon, beating Cathedral Catholic 2-0 in the Grossmont-Metro-City tournament.
Senior pitchers Rowan Haynes and Kade Gaeir combined to strikeout eight batters while holding the Dons to two hits over seven innings. Haynes started and had a no-hitter going with one out in the fifth inning until a bloop double by Jayden Ysais gave Cathedral Catholic a runner in scoring position.
Leadoff hitter Alex Harrington followed with a line drive single up the middle, but a perfect throw home by Trevor Smith nailed Ysais at the plate to spoil the Dons' best scoring opportunity.
Junior designated hitter Phillip Jones continued his scorching start to his junior season by hitting his first two career home runs. He opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fourth inning and gave the Eagles late insurance with another home run to right field in the seventh inning.
Through six games this season, Jones is hitting .615 with five doubles and two home runs. He also stole a base after getting hit by a pitch in the second inning.
