Final 2023-24 Top 25 California High School boys basketball rankings (3/15/2024)

A week after the CIF State Championships, SBLive reveals its best of the best, regardless of how playoffs turned out; Of course, Harvard-Westlake is head of the class

A four-month journey to determine California's best boys basketball teams ended a week ago, with the crowning of six state champions.

Those were divided by the state's competitive equity format, with the Open Division serving as the elite portion of squads, followed by Division 1 with the next most competitive, followed by D2, D3, D4 and D5.

Though squads should be — and all were — recognized for fighting through the playoff gauntlet, the final SBLive Top 25 aims to subjectively pick out the very best squads overall.

CIF State Championship boys basketball 2024 recap: All six box scores

It's no easy task and there will be some picks that probably don't make sense based on late-season results.

For instance:

  • Placing St. Joseph-Santa Maria ahead of Clovis North will seem quite curious considering the Broncos beat the Knights in the Central Section Division 1 championship game just two weeks ago.
  • Likewise, Mater Dei ended the season of Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks 79-71 in the SoCal D1 Regional, yet the the Trailblazers finished a few spots ahead of the Monarchs.

At play there is simply a body of work, taking into consideration the entire season, quality wins, strength of schedule and injuries, among other possible factors.

Nevertheless, the order may not be perfect for certain. But What is perfectly clear is that all these squads had fantastic seasons, and that two-time defending Open Division champion Harvard-Westlake clearly deserves the top acclaim.

Harvard-Westlake edges Salesian to defend CIF State Open Division title

The Wolverines, coached expertly by David Rebibo and led by reigning SBLive California Player of the Year Trent Perry, pulled of the quadruple feat of winning Mission League, Southern Section Open, SoCal Regional Open and State Open championships.

That's some grand slam.

They weren't dominating in all the wins, and showed their grit in tight title wins, twice over No. 2 Roosevelt 54-47 and 63-59, and once in the state finals, 50-45, at Golden 1 Center over No. 4 Salesian-Richmond, Northern California's top squad.

Other state champions crowned we're our No. 4 team St. John Bosco (D1), No. 25 Oakland Tech (D2) and unranked Alemany (D3), Monterey (D4) and Athenian (D5).
