Two Southern California high school football powers - Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita - kick off their 2024 seasons on Saturday night with a highly-anticipated CIF Southern Section matchup at Mission Viejo High School

The Diablos and Eagles are ranked No. 5 and No. 12, respectively, in the SBLive California Top 25 statewide preseason rankings, and both are also ranked in the Top 10 of the CIF Southern Section preseason rankings.

Mission Viejo begins the season nationally ranked as well. The Diablos are No. 22 in the SBLive/SI Top 25 preseason high school football rankings.

3RD QUARTER UPDATES

END OF 3RD QUARTER: Mission Viejo 21, Santa Margarita 0

TURNOVER! Santa Margarita turns it over on downs inside the Mission Viejo 10-yard line with under 1 minute left in the third quarter.

TOUCHDOWN MISSION VIEJO! Phillip Bell catches a touchdown pass from Luke Fahey to give Mission Viejo a 21-0 lead with 9:45 left in the second quarter. Fahey has two TD passes so far.

INTERCEPTION! Mission Viejo's Jeron Jones picks off a pass on the first play of the second half and the Diablos are quickly in scoring position.

2ND QUARTER UPDATES

HALFTIME: Mission Viejo 14, Santa Margarita 0

PICK SIX! Brock DeFries picks off a pass and returns it for a touchdown with 2:23 left in the half. The two-point conversion is good. 14-0 Mission Viejo.

TURNOVER! Mission Viejo turns it over on downs inside the Santa Margarita 10-yard line.

FAKE PUNT! With just under 6 minutes left in the half Mission Viejo pulls out the fake punt on 4th-and-8 and converts on a beautiful pass down the seam from the punter. The Diablos are still leading 6-0.

INTERCEPTION! Alabama commit Dijon Lee picks off a deep pass from Santa Margarita QB John Gazzaniga and returns it to the Diablos 40-yard line. Still 6-0 with 8 minutes left in the half.

Mission Viejo has the ball at its own 5-yard line, facing a 3rd-and-10 to start the quarter.

1ST QUARTER UPDATES

TURNOVER! Santa Margarita responds with a long drive which stalls at the Mission Viejo 5-yard line after the Eagles are stuffed on a 4th-and-1 run. Mission Viejo takes over with 1:10 left in the quarter, leading 6-0.

TOUCHDOWN MISSION VIEJO! The Diablos cap off their opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Luke Fahey to Brady Bowman to take an early 6-0 lead. The PAT is no good.
