Congratulations to Suwannee football player Anthony Powers, the winner of SBLive Florida's Athlete of Week award as voted by Florida high school sports fans.

Powers, a freshman starting quarterback for the Suwannee Bulldogs, earned 49.17% of the 28,964 votes in a state-wide poll, after Powers went for 343 yards, four touchdown passes and added two rushing scores in a 47-7 win over Santa Fe.

Here are all the other athletes that were nominated for Oct. 3-Oct. 9:

Luke Knight, Merritt Island, Football: Remember Knight? Yeah you do. The former Jesuit quarterback who won a state title in Class 6A last year? Well, he’s at a new school and he’s doing some big things. The signal caller completed 28-of-36 passes for 467 yards, three touchdowns and added three rushing in a 45-36 win over Eustis.

Israel Mirtil, Lake Region, Cross Country: The Lake Region senior was diagnosed with autism at age five and has become a championship cross country runner. Mirtil won the Polk County championship last weekend with a time of 17:00.43, edging out Ridge Community’s Kruz Shembri by 14.42 seconds.

AJ Hairston, Monarch, Football: It was a week of big time performances all over the place and south Florida had a bevy of them. Monarch quarterback AJ Hairston went off in a 42-13 win over McArthur, completing 21-of-30 for 320 yards and four touchdowns.

Anthony Barbar, Westminster Academy, Football: The Lions signal caller had himself a very efficient day in a 35-6 win over Bishop Snyder. Barbar completed 19-of-21 passes for 304 yards, four touchdowns. 

Caleb Coburn, East Lake, Football: We can’t forget the performances from the makeup games on Monday night as East Lake made a stunning comeback behind the play of quarterback Caleb Coburn. The linebacker-turned-quarterback went for 306 yards passing, completing 17-of-30 passes, five touchdowns and added 99 on the ground and two more scores.

Patrick Koon, Leon, Cross Country: The Lions cross country runner set a boys record in the 5K run at Apalachee Regional at the FSU Invite. Koon passed former Leon cross country runner Sukhi Kohsla to set a new boys program record.

Tayshaun Balmir, Pasco, Football: I think Balmir could probably make this list every week, couldn’t he? Well, he did it again and all while nearly setting a county record. Balmir rushed for 360 yards and and scored four times in Pasco’s 39-18 win over Cypress Creek.

Sabby Meassick, Tohopekaliga, Football: This freshman could end up having some state records when its all said and done. He ended up having himself one of the top performances in the state Friday. Meassick threw for 437 yards and seven touchdowns in a 53-14 win over Wesley Chapel.

Michael Grant, Maclay, Football: The Marauders’ signal caller even in a loss put up some impressive numbers. Though Maclay fell 33-28 to Chipley, Grant threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns. He’s one of the top quarterbacks in the state.

Joe Jackson, Ridge Community, Football: The Kansas State commit ran wild in a 55-26 Ridge Community victory over Haines City on Friday. Jackson rushed for 245 yards on 16 attempts and scored four touchdowns. One of the top rushing performances in central Florida.
