THIS WEEK’S FLORIDA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NOMINEES:

Editor’s Note: Our Athlete of the Week feature and corresponding poll is intended to be fun, and we do not set limits on how many times a fan can vote during the competition. However, we do not allow votes that are generated by script, macro or other automated means. Athletes that receive votes generated by script, macro or other automated means will be disqualified.

CJ Nettles, Pensacola Catholic, Football: The sophomore had a sensational game against Walton in Pensacola Catholic’s 35-6 victory Friday night. Nettles finished the game rushing for 236 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Crusaders improved to 8-0 on the season.

Rod Gainey, Tampa Bay Tech, Football: One of the arguably fastest running backs in the Tampa Bay Area showed off his speed in front of a packed crowd off Orient Road Friday night. Gainey rushed for 193 yards on just 13 touches and scored a touchdown in Tampa Bay Tech’s 28-0 win over Wharton.

Jaquez Kindell, Plant, Football: The Plant Panthers have won six games in a row and wide receiver Jaquez Kindell has been one of the main reasons why. In the Panthers’ latest victory, Kindell scored four total touchdowns with 98 yards receiving, a 95-yard kickoff return and a rushing score.

Parker St. John, Lakeland Christian, Football: When Lakeland Christian head coach Danny Williams decided to make the huge decision to go for the game-winning 2-point conversion in the pivotal Class 1A-Suburban, District 5 contest, St. John’s number was called. Going for the win, St. John scored the go-ahead 2-point conversion to give the Vikings the 1A-S, District 5 championship.

Logan Shawell, Hudson, Football: Hudson’s passing attack has been talked about all season long, but the play of running back Logan Shawell cannot be overlooked. Shawell rushed for 185 yards on 17 attempts and scored twice in Hudson’s 33-21 win over Weeki Wachee.

Preston Wright, Trinity Catholic, Football: When it comes to Marion County teams, Trinity Catholic has been the county’s top team week in and week out. Wright played lights out for the Celtics in their latest win, 26-21 over Ponte Vedra. The quarterback completed 28-of-34 passes for 338 yards and a touchdown.

Dante Johnson-Turner, Mount Dora, Football: Oops Johnson-Turner did it again. The electric running back on homecoming night for Mount Dora was able to rush for 238 yards and score three touchdowns in the Hurricanes 42-7 win over The Villages on Friday night.

William Poe, Zephyrhills, Cross Country: The Zephyrhills’ junior runner has had himself a great year running across the board and set a school record in the 5K at the Sunshine Athletic Conference meet. Poe with the new school record also finished in first place.

Creed Whittemore, Buchholz, Football: The Buchholz starting quarterback has played superb all season long and Friday’s 45-31 win over Oakleaf was no different. Whittemore threw five touchdown passes against the Knights.

Armani Barbancourt, Somerset Academy-Canyons, Football: We don’t give enough love to the big boys up front on the offensive line, but here’s for trying to make up for that. Sophomore offensive lineman Armani Barbancourt had himself a night against Delray Beach American Heritage, with four pancake blocks in a 27-16 win.

Emma Gongora, Lake Nona, Volleyball: Trailing one game to Windermere, Gongora led the charge to give Lake Nona the much needed lift. Gongora notched 18 kills to lead the Lions to a 3-1 victory over Windermere.
