Florida Girls Flag Football State Championship 2023 Recaps: Tampa Sweeps up titles in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA- The end of the girls flag football season came to a close at Mandarin High School as it became an all Tampa affair in the 904.
Both Tampa Bay Area schools Alonso and Robinson came away with state championships on Saturday afternoon and did it going away. Each team had displayed all season long their case on being the best team in its respective classification and it culminated with titles in hand. We recap the two Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) championship games that took on Saturday.
Class 2A: Alonso 33, Fleming Island 6
It didn't take long for the undefeated Ravens (23-0) to show everyone why they were SBLive Sports Florida's No. 1 team for most of the 2023 season.
Alonso intercepted a pass on Fleming Island's first drive and that helped set the tone. The Ravens claimed their third state championship in school history en route to the blowout victory over the Golden Eagles.
Matt Hernandez's group was coming off a 19-0 shutout win over Seminole Ridge in the state semifinal and not much changed in the state championship game against the previously undefeated Fleming Island (16-1). Alonso scored two touchdowns in the opening quarter and by halftime held a commanding 20-6 advantage. The Ravens added a touchdown in the third and one in the fourth to run away with the victory.
Leading the way via the receiving game for the Ravens was Eryn Klaus, who scored three times. The game concludes arguably one of the best flag football careers on the prep level as Alonso's Mieke Rowe graduates as the school's best signal caller ever. Heck, she might be the best the state has ever seen on the girls flag football circuit.
Class 1A: Robinson 32, Choctawhatchee 13
Maybe the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could have Robinson hoist its latest championship banner inside of the AdventHealth Training Center?
Since the Knights played their postseason run within the friendly confines of the 2-time Super Bowl champions practice facility, it seems only fitting for Robinson. On Saturday evening, they completed the mission.
Robinson won its seventh straight state championship as they cruised past Choctawhatchee (18-3). The Knights finish the season at 21-2 and now have won eight total state championships.
The Knights took the ball to start off the game and didn't waste any time in getting on the board. On the ensuing Knights' possession, they picked off a Diaris Morales' pass and added another first quarter touchdown to go up 13-0 heading into the second period.
Everything began to really spiral for the Indians in the second quarter as the Knights got another 2-for-1 special, scoring a touchdown and nabbing an interception to follow. Robinson scored again after the turnover and went into halftime with a dominating 26-0 advantage.
Choctawhatchee cut the lead down to 26-13 with eight minutes remaining in the game, but another Robinson touchdown put the game fully out of reach and another state title coming back to South Tampa.
