Exclusive: Leesburg head football coach Steven Moffett steps down
LEESBURG, FLORIDA – Former University of Central Florida quarterback Stephen Moffett, in his first year as a high school football head coach, transformed the Leesburg Yellow Jackets from a 2-8 squad in 2022 into a 10-2 team which reached the second round of the FHSAA 3S state playoffs.
Following Leesburg's 17-10 season-ending playoff loss to Lake Wales, last Friday, news began to leak out that Moffett would be resigning his coaching post with the Yellow Jackets, possibly to accept a similar position with another school.
On Monday afternoon, Leesburg athletic director Spencer Hey confirmed the news to SBLive Sports Florida that Moffett would not be returning for the 2024 season.
"We want to thank Coach Moffett for everything he has done for our school, our football program, our student athletes, and our community," said Hey. "We had a very successful season and we look forward to continuing that success. We want to wish Coach Moffett the best in his future endeavors."
Moffett's impact this season at Leesburg cannot be understated. He elevated the play of quarterback Solomon Georges to the point that he had one of the best seasons in school history. As the victories mounted up, the stands for home games filled and the culture around the program improved immensely.
Prior to taking over at Leesburg, Moffett was the offensive coordinator at Winter Park.
At this time it is uncertain if Moffett has plans to coach at another school next season, but SBLive sources have linked him to at least two other programs. As of this posting SBLive Sports has been unable to reach Coach Moffett directly.
