Hawthorne won the program’s first ever state championship last season in a 14-2 win over Northview at Gene Cox Stadium. Back in 2021 when the Hornets faced the Cowboys, it would be the boys from Madison bringing home a state crown.
Can Hawthorne repeat as state champions or will Madison County be bringing home a seventh title? The Class 1R state championship will be the 8 p.m. on the opening day of the FHSAA state championships this week on Thursday and could be setting up to be a classic.
Hawthorne (12-0) enters the big game undefeated and head coach Cornelius Ingram has put his regiment through an arduous regular season schedule.
The Hornets during the regular season played playoff teams like Middleburg, Newberry and South Sumter. Some would say this helped prepare them for the road ahead and Ingram’s bunch has made it look fairly easy.
Guiding the offense once again is Ingram’s son, CJ, which the junior has been one of the top signal callers in the state. The junior quarterback has completed 121-of-186 passes for 2,470 yards and 37 touchdowns, with also adding six scores on the ground.
