Just two years later, Hawthorne and Madison County meet again in the Florida (FHSAA) Class 1R high school football state championship game. 

In the 2021 FHSAA Class 1A state championship game, Mike Coe's last season with Madison County, the Cowboys prevailed in a thrilling 13-12 win over Hawthorne for the state title. 

Now, it's the Hornets looking to defend their state championship against a Cowboys squad aiming to return to the mountain top on Thursday night for the Class 1R crown.
