Top 25 girls flag football preseason rankings: Alonso, Robinson begin as top two teams

Ravens and Knights both are coming off state championship seasons and are looking to do it again this spring

It’s high school football season once again in the Sunshine State! Nope, not that kind of football. Not yet anyways, darn it.

Girls flag football season will be getting underway throughout the state of Florida in about a month and there’s plenty to think about before then.

So how about some preseason rankings for an appetizer?

Headlining the top of the rankings heading into preseason play is the No. 1, Alonso Ravens of Hillsborough County, and at No. 2 is Robinson. Both teams won state championships last May and are coming off strong 2023 campaigns. There’s a slew of teams we looked at for our initial rankings and now we break out the preseason edition. Check out our power rankings and let us know what you think.

Find the complete breakdown of the SBLive Florida Girls Flag Football Preseason Power 25:

1. Alonso

The defending Class 2A state champions begin as the top team in the state and coach Matt Hernandez will have another very talented bunch.

2. Robinson

Of course we can’t have Robinson anywhere too far behind Alonso in these rankings, as the Knights are the reigning Class 1A champs.

3. Lennard

Whenever you’ve got a player like Abby Ewell returning, you’ve got to really like your chances on any given night.

4. Choctawhachee

Finishing at 18-3 last season, Class 1A state runner-ups and having quarterback Diaris Morales back solidifies the Indians being high on this list.

5. Western

The Wildcats always have the talent to compete with anyone, being the top team out of South Florida from 2023.

6. Fleming Island

Replacing Mykayla Maddox at quarterback won’t be an easy task, but we’re guessing London Jenkins catching passes will make things a little easier.

7. Newsome

After finishing 14-5 last season, exiting in the region semifinal round, the Wolves will have plenty of talent to compete with just about anyone.

8. Steinbrenner

Yes, another Tampa Bay Area team. I mean, the Warriors provide plenty of reasons to like them heading into the preseason.

9. Miami Edison

Bringing back a player like Camille Candidate definitely helps the Red Raiders’ defensively, as she returns as one of the top rushers in the state.

10. Seminole Ridge

Don’t think we’ve forgotten about the Hawks here whatsoever. They reached the state semifinals and will be in the hunt for a trip back to states.

11. Pace

We like what Pace has coming back on offense, including the stellar play of quarterback Amaya Pablo from last season.

12. Spanish River

The Sharks really impressed all of last season, reaching the region final round. Can they make the leap and get to states?

13. Killian

Right there on the cusp of getting into the Class 1A state semifinals, Killian has plenty of motivation towards getting over the proverbial hump.

14. Spruce Creek

A 17-2 finish was a fine season for Spruce Creek. Now they’ll look to take the next step in getting out of the region this time around.

15. St. Thomas Aquinas

The Raiders were really an upstart team last season and made great strides. This season, they won’t be sneaking up on anyone.

16. Bradford

Okay, hear us out on the Tornadoes. Whenever you got players like Arnayshia Griffin and Nichelle Brown coming back, you’ve got a pretty talented crew.

17. Paxon

This ball club gave everyone in Northern Florida fits in the regular season and postseason. We don’t see why they might not again in 2024.

18. Mainland

The Buccaneers made a strong playoff run last season, relying a lot of their tough defense. Sounds a lot like the boys’ Class 3S state championship crew, eh?

19. Miami Central

Yes, we’ve got to have the Rockets somewhere on this initial list. They were one of South Florida’s more talented clubs and came close to turning the corner in 2023.

20. Wellington

Having a quarterback like Keelin Coleman back at the helm of the offense definitely makes the Wolverines a dangerous team to face. Watch out for this squad.

21. Sandalwood

The Saints are not a team to be trifled with. Sandalwood nearly defeated Fleming Island in last season’s region quarterfinal round, just falling 20-19.

22. Stanton

The Blue Devils were not far off from being in a position to reach states, falling to Choctawhatchee in the region finals. They’ll be a team certainly in the hunt in Class 1A.

23. Armwood

The Hawks are another Hillsborough County team that every season has talent to boot. There’s no change in that this upcoming 2024 campaign.

24. Winter Park

We would have the Wildcats higher on this list, but some key graduations made it a little difficult. They’ll be the Orlando area’s top team from jump street.

25. Braden River

So we liked what the Pirates did last season on the South Suncoast. Let’s ignore the 32-0 loss to Robinson at the end because, well, the Knights are the standard in 1A.

ON THE BUBBLE: Apopka, Belleview, Chiles, Cooper City, Dillard, Dr. Krop, Ed White, Ferguson, Fletcher, Forest, Fort Pierce Central, Fort Pierce Westwood, FSU High, Gibbs, Harmony, Horizon, John Carroll, Lecanto, Lincoln Park Academy, Miami Southridge, Martin County, New Smyrna Beach, Osceola (Seminole), Palm Beach Gardens, Palm Harbor University, Park Vista, Pembroke Pines Charter, Somerset Canyons, Somerset Silver, Springstead, Tampa Catholic, Tarpon Springs, Wildwood, Weeki Wachee
