Top 25 Florida high school baseball rankings (3/6/2024)

Tournament win keeps Stoneman Douglas atop the Top 25 baseball poll; No. IMG Academy suffers its first loss

Making it into the SBLive Florida Baseball Power 25 is one thing. Staying there is another.

Since week one, there's been some major shaking up in the SBLive Sports Florida Top 25 state rankings, which shows just how many quality teams are in the state. The top 10 has been no exception.

The big story of the week is IMG, ranked No. 1 in some national rankings, suffered a rare loss in the Perfect Game Tournament in Hoover, Alabama.

The constant thus far is Marjory Stoneman Douglas, which remains atop our SBLive Sports Florida rankings. The Eagles will be tested this week against Jesuit Tampa.

Let’s get right into our latest Top 25 rankings.

SBLive Sports Florida Top 25

1. MAJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS (5-0)

The Eagles claimed the BCAA (Broward County Athletic Association) Baseball Championship Tournament Tier 1 bracket title with a dominating 12-0 win over West Broward. In their three wins in the tournament, Stoneman Douglas outscored the opposition, 24-1. The Eagles have won 56 straight games, and they promise to be tested on Thursday at home against national-power, Jesuit.

2. DURANT PLANT CITY (4-0)

A Class 7A state title contender, Durant overtakes IMG this week for the second spot. In two wins last week, the Cougars outscored their opposition, 20-1.

3. IMG ACADEMY (5-1)

Even with a loss, the Ascenders remain a serious national championship contender. But this week, they slipped one spot in our rankings after an 11-6 setback in the Perfect Game championship game to Bob Jones (Madison, Ala.). IMG will be tested this week with a couple of games in South Florida. On Friday night, the Ascenders face Archbishop McCarthy, and on Saturday afternoon, they take on Doral Academy.

4. DORAL ACADEMY (8-0)

Off to a terrific start, the Firebirds impressed last week with lopsided wins over Somerset Academy Pembroke Pines (8-2) and Keys Gate Homestead (10-0), and they blanked Everglades Miramar, 11-0, on Tuesday. Their big matchup is Saturday at home against IMG.

5. CALVARY CHRISTIAN CLEARWATER (5-0)

Thus far, the Warriors are making it look easy. They beat Lovett Atlanta, 6-1, on Tuesday, and had a big 7-2 win last week against state-ranked Lakeland Christian.

6. ST. JOHN'S COUNTRY DAY ORANGE PARK (5-0)

The Class 2A power has won a couple of one-run games, as well as enjoyed a couple of blowouts (see, 20-3 over Florida State University High School).

7. NORTH BROWARD PREP (7-1)

Bouncing back from a loss to Archbishop McCarthy, North Broward Prep traveled to Alabama and won the Perfect Game White Bracket tournament at Hoover, Ala. The Eagles dominated Lewisburg (Mississippi), 7-1, in the title game. On Tuesday, they received a scare, and held off Chaminade-Madonna, 2-1.

8. TRINITY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY JACKSONVILLE (3-1)

Since opening with a 4-2 loss in a tournament game against Sam Houston (Lake Charles, La.), the Conquerors have impressed. At the Lagrange Invitational, they routed Buford (Georgia), 12-1, last Saturday.

9. SPRUCE CREEK PORT ORANGE (4-0-1)

Last Thursday, the Hawks were involved in a rare 2-2 tie against Seabreeze Daytona Beach. And on Friday, they rolled to a 10-5 win against Nease Ponte Verde.

10. JESUIT TAMPA (3-2)

Two early losses dropped the Tigers three spots in our latest poll. Still, there’s way too much talent to not bounce back. They took a step in that direction with a 10-5 win on Tuesday at Sunset Miami. This is a big week for Jesuit with a showdown on Thursday at top-ranked Stoneman Douglas in Parkland.

11. PENSACOLA CATHOLIC (3-0)

The Crusaders played one game last week, and overwhelmed Paxon, 11-1. They have a big game against Marist (Atlanta) on Thursday.

12. MIAMI CHRISTIAN (5-1)

The Victors responded nicely after stumbling against Archbishop McCarthy. Last week, they got by Ferguson Miami and Braddock Miami. On Tuesday, they held off Dade Christian, 2-1.

13. WESTMINSTER CHRISTIAN MIAMI (4-1)

Lazaro Collera again showed why he might be a first-round pick. The right-hander (Miami commit) was on point in a 6-1 win over Columbus at the University of Miami on Monday. In 6 1/3 innings, Collera struck out 10 while allowing one run on three hits.

14. SICKLES TAMAP (4-1)

Since losing their opener to Durant, the Gryphons have bounced back with impressive wins. Last Thursday, they beat Strawberry Crest Dover, 8-1, and on Tuesday, blanked Gaither Tampa, 3-0.

15. LAKE MARY (5-0)

Offensively, the Rams are fresh off a week where they scored 21 runs in two games. They face a challenge this week against Spruce Creek.

16. LAKELAND CHRISTIAN (4-1)

A state title contender in Class 2A, the Vikings lone loss has been to Calvary Christian Clearwater. On Monday, they held off Indian Rocks Christian, 9-8.

17. MONTVERDE ACADEMY (6-1)

In tournament play last week, the Eagles beat Bolles Jacksonville, 5-3.

18. WINDERMERE (4-1)

Riding a three-game win streak, Windermere has been putting up big offensive numbers, blanking Horizon Winter Garden, 8-0, last Thursday.

19. SEABREEZE DAYTONA BEACH (4-1-1)

Merit has earned the Sandcrabs a spot in our rankings. They tied Spruce Creek, 2-2, and have wins over St. Augustine (11-8) and Mainland (13-1).

20. AMERICAN HERITAGE PLANTATION (3-3)

Injuries have slowed down the Patriots early in the season, but they’re starting to put things together. After losing their first three, American Heritage has won three in a row, including a 3-1 decision against St. Thomas Aquinas.

21. HAGERTY OVIEDO (3-2)

Like American Heritage, Hagerty is too good to not be state ranked. They’ve responded after losing their first two games to outscore the opposition, 32-1, over a three-game winning streak.

22. ST. AUGUSTINE (4-2)

The Yellow Jackets lost a shootout against Seabreeze. They’ve put up impressive run totals, scoring at least eight runs in all five games. But on Tuesday, St. Augustine was shut out, 2-0, by Wolfson Jacksonville.

23. ST. JOHN NEUMANN NAPLES (4-1)

The Celtics have won three straight games, including shutting out Gulliver Prep, 8-0.

24. OAK HALL GAINESVILLE (4-0)

25. BISHOP VEROT FORT MYERS (6-0)

The Vikings are making it look easy, scoring double-digit runs in all six of their games.
