San Diego Prep Football Insider: Grossmont putting up huge numbers
Every week, Scoreboook Live California reporter Bodie De Silva highlights the top performers and the most intriguing storylines in San Diego Section high school football.
NOTABLE RESULTS FROM WEEK 2
Cathedral Catholic, who jumped up to #1 in my poll this week, made a huge statement for the 2nd week in a row. The Dons handled Saguaro (Arizona) throughout the game and got a last minute stop on 4th and goal to collect an 18-10 victory over the Sabercats. The 10 points that the Dons held Saguaro to, is their lowest total since October of 2011, a span of 101 games.
Mission Hills rebounded in week two as they traveled north once again, this time to take on Westlake. The Grizzlies scored 17 points in the 4th quarter for a come from behind 25-21 victory. They’ll host Redlands East Valley (0-2) in week 3 for a third consecutive Southern Section opponent.
The Grossmont Foothillers offense appears to be in peak form. They took down Mater Dei Catholic 59-26 in week 2 led by quarterback Jaime Odom who threw for 437 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Foothillers have now scored 102 points through two games.
TOP PERFORMERS
La Jolla Country Day QB EJ Kreutzmann has been
on a tear the first two weeks. He threw for 386 yards and 4 touchdowns against
Chula Vista and followed it up with 663 yards passing and 7 touchdowns in week two
against Cardena Federal Prep.
Bishop’s QB Tyler Buchner looks like he’s all
the way back from last season’s ACL Tear. The Notre Dame commit threw for 300
yards and 5 touchdowns in week two against University City while also running
for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Helix RB Elelyon Noa ran for 185 yards and a
touchdown in the Highlanders loss to Herriman, Utah. During the game Noa
surpassed Reggie Bush for the career rushing record at Helix and joined the
exclusive club of 5,000-yard career rushers in San Diego.
St. Augustine LB Connor Heffler had 9 tackles
and 4 sacks in the Saints 47-0 shutout of Eastlake on Friday.
San Marcos LB Nick Tiefer had 13 tackles, 2
sacks, and a forced fumble as the Knights beat Mesa on Friday. He’s collected
33 tackles in two games so far.
SAN DIEGO VS. SOUTHERN
The San Diego Section picked up two more
impressive wins vs. the Southern Section in week 2 with Mission Hills beating
Westlake and Carlsbad taking down Long Beach Millikan, 52-7. Torrey Pines lost
to San Clemente, 31-7, after beating the Tritons a year ago. Another big week
is on tap with Cathedral Catholic hosting Corona Centennial, La Costa Canyon
hosting San Clemente, Mission Hills hosting Redlands East Valley, Carlsbad
traveling to Lawndale, and St. Augustine traveling to Loyola.
