Let’s take a closer look at some of the top returning running backs in high school football for the 2023 season in the Peach State.
Our list includes some of the best in the country and players who look to be the top up-and-coming tailbacks throughout the Peach State in 2023. We compiled 15 names of running backs who figure to be among the best in Georgia.
Plenty of worthy names are on this list, so be sure to vote in our poll for who you think will be the top returning running back for the upcoming season. Voting will close on August 31st, just in time for the start of the regular season.

Sammy Brown, Jefferson: Now Brown projects to be a linebacker in college, but let’s not denote the fact that he could tote the rock. The Clemson commit rushed for nearly 1,500 yards and scored 21 touchdowns.
Bryce Hicks, Carrollton: The 5-foot-11, 170-pound running back rushed for 1,623 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2022. Hicks has offers from Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Michigan, Georgia State and Liberty.
Na’Seir Samuel, Benedictine: Samuel forms a perfect pairing with Kromenhoek in the backfield for the Cadets. Last season, the running back rushed for a team-high 919 yards on 112 attempts and scored seven touchdowns.
Dwight Phillips Jr., Pebblebrook: Phillips Jr. has track speed as he ran the 100-meter dash in 10.43 seconds. The tailback is already committed to the University of Georgia.
Caden Williams, Calhoun: Coming off a season in which Williams rushed for over 1,100 yards and scored 17 touchdowns, Williams could be in store for a huge fall campaign. Williams is a Liberty commitment.
Ousmane Kromah, Lee County: One of the most talented running backs in all of Georgia resides out of Lee County in Kromah. Kromah as a sophomore rushed for over 1,500 yards and has offers from Alabama, Colorado, Florida and Georgia.
Micah Welch, Baldwin: Welch is a Colorado commitment and heads into 2023 season with high expectations. The tailback rushed for 1,373 yards, scoring 16 touchdowns in 2022.
Nykahi Davenport, Roswell: The junior tailback had himself one of the best 2022 seasons of any running backs in the Peach State. Davenport rushed for 1,904 yards and 23 touchdowns and has offers Appalachian State, Cincinnati and East Carolina.
Khyair Spain, Parkview: Spain was one of the focal points of the Panthers’ offense last season. The running back ran for 2,383 yards, scored 16 touchdowns and has offers from Charlotte, East Carolina and Indiana.
Nick Woodford, Northeast: As a sophomore, Woodford had a breakout season with the Raiders. Woodford rushed for 2,728 yards on 273 carries and 40 touchdowns.
Cameron Robinson, Mill Creek: Robinson had a strong junior campaign for the Hawks as he rushed for 1,802 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. The running back also caught 23 passes for 255 yards and three scores.
Matthew Fuller, Wayne County: Fuller was a two-way standout for Wayne County and is already committed to South Carolina. The running back rushed for 1,757 yards on 257 touches for 22 touchdowns in 2022.
Gavin Hall, Gainesville: Hall transferred from Hebron Christian over to Gainesville during the offseason after a stellar 2022 season. The tailback rushed for 2,547 yards a year ago.
Jordan Triplett, Fredrica Academy: The pride of Saint Simons Island is coming off one of the top statistical 2022 campaigns of any running back. Triplett, an Air Force commitment, rushed for 2,305 yards and 26 touchdowns.
Dae’jeaun Dennis, Ware County: Dennis helped the Gators win the Class 5A state championship last season with a solid year on the ground. The tailback rushed for 1,247 yards and scored 19 touchdowns.
