Elite 8 and Ultimate Club Duals highlight weekend national wrestling action
COLLEGE PARK, GEORGIA – The Elite 8 Duals took place on Saturday and Sunday at the Georgia International Convention Center in College Park. The tournament was comprised of 12 teams. It started out with two pools of six teams with the top four from each pool then moving into a bracket. The bracket was wrestled on Sunday.
The affair uses a hybrid scoring system, mainly using the high school folkstyle rules, but applying college wrestling’s riding time and three-point takedown.
Each team is based in a specific state, but the members of those squads hail from across the country. Dynasty is listed as a Pennsylvania team, but its roster contains wrestlers from California, Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio and Virginia. POWA is based in Indiana but is comprised of grapplers from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Utah.
Dynasty and POWA were the two teams to emerge from the fray and met in the finals on Sunday afternoon. Dynasty started out with a big 24-4 lead only to see the tide change and POWA come back and take the lead before a late rally sealed the win for Dynasty.
The dual started at 100 pounds when Caleb Noble (Illinois) posted a 5-1 win over Case Bell (Indiana). At 106, Rocco Cassioppi (Illinois) wasted little time in getting his squad on the board with a 17-6 major decision of Caden Correl (Illinois).
POWA’s 4-3 lead would be short-lived after a forfeit to Dom Munaretto (Illinois) was followed by Seth Mendoza (Illinois) winning the battle of Mendozas over California's Moses Mendoza, 5-3, to take a 12-4 advantage.
Dynasty added to that lead with forfeits handed to Bishop McCort (Pennsylvania) teammates Jax Forrest and Bo Bassett at 126 and 132 respectively. It was a questionable move considering that the roster for POWA had Sebastian Degenarro (Florida) at 126 and Drew Gorman (Georgia) at 132, who are both nationally ranked wrestlers. It stands to reason that those grapplers would have most likely saved bonus points for POWA, which were very valuable considering the meeting came down to the final match of the dual.
Forest and Bassett destroyed the field and were wrestling like Mad Men, particularly Bo Bassett who rung up four tech falls, a major decision, and a default win en route to the finals. Bassett, at 132, looked like the wrestler we’re used to seeing after he was dominated at 138 at Who’s No. 1.
Starting at 138, POWA got back in the win column when Alex Braun (Minnesota) decked Tyler Harrill (Nebraska) in the third period, 4:54. Pierson Manville was next at 145 and flattened his opponent Lorenzo Alston (North Carolina) in 50 seconds bringing them within eight, 24 to 16.
California’s Andrew Barbosa (152) provided an upset over Kael Voinovich (Iowa), 12-5. Voinovich has transferred from Stillwater, Oklahoma to Iowa City for his senior season.
From that point, POWA would win the next four matches, all with bonus points. Ethan Birden (Ohio) posted a 21-5 tech fall of Riley Johnson (Nebraska) at 160. Unranked Connor McCloskey (Georgia) posted a major decision of Carson Thomas (Ohio) at 170. The 182 bracket saw New Jersey’s Harvey Ludington roll to a 17-6 major decision over Cade Ziola (Nebraska). Anthony Harris (New Jersey) posted POWA’s final victory at 195 with a 17-1 tech fall of Californian Eugenio Franco.
POWA now sat ahead, 34-27, with two bouts left. Noah Wenzel (Illinois) did his part for Dynasty posting an 18-3 tech fall of Trevyn Gates (Utah). With the score 34-32, this set up a heavyweight match that was literally, the winner takes all.
On paper, Dynasty was heavily favored as their heavyweight was Virginia’s Parker Farrell, a wrestler ranked in the top five in the nation. He would be taking on Pennsylvania's John Pardo. Farrell had suffered some upsets earlier in the tournament. Could one more be on the way? As it turns out, that was not to be the case as Farrell dominated Pardo, posting a 17-0 technical fall to give his team the 37-34 victory.
To reach the finals, Dynasty took out Team Carnage, 41-34, in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Dynasty downed Oklahoma Black Ops, 55-8. Dynasty's closest match during the pool rounds came in their first match with team Thunder where they prevailed, 32-29. They beat the Scarlet Knights, 62-9, Poway, 51-11, and had a close battle with Minion Legends, 33-26, in their final pool match.
Going undefeated for Dynasty were Noble, Munaretto, Seth Mendoza, Forest, and Bassett, all with 8-0 records. Franco and Wenzel were both 5-2. Coming in at 4-3 were Barbosa, Thomas, Ziola and Ferrell.
There were far too many ranked versus ranked occurrences to highlight here, but we will point out some of the major ones. A more detailed look at the results will come with our first preseason rankings, which should come out later this week.
Among the notable results for Dynasty was Seth Mendoza with a 5-0 win over Edwin Sierra (California) and planting Gauge Botero (Pennsylvania) at the 4:29 mark of the second period. Barbosa beat Jaydon Robinson (Illinois), 12-1, and Layton Schneider (Oklahoma), 5-1. Bassett stormed to a 21-3 tech fall over Nick O'Neill (Pennsylvania).
At 126, Degenarro beat Fargo standout Jake Hockaday (Indiana), 9-0. Eren Sement (Pennsylvania) beat Degenarro 12-0 and also tacked on a 7-5 victory over Jake Crapps (Georgia). At 138, Tyler Guerra (Illinois) registered an 11-3 major decision over Gavin Linsman (Missouri).
Unranked Daishaun Powe (Alabama) pinned Gabriel Bouyssou (Rhode Island) and then defeated Ryan Ford (New Jersey), 7-6, at 145. Also at 145, Alston upset Fargo placer Logan Paradice (GA/TN), 5-2.
The 152-pound weight class provided a number of upsets from unranked guys. New Jersey’s Zach Ballante defeated four ranked grapplers including three Californians (Barbosa, 4-1 in overtime, Leo Contino, 2-1 in the first tiebreaker, and Laird Root, 5-2) and Ty Wilson from Ohio.
Hunter Sturgill (Tennessee) beat Schneider 10-0 and Voinovich 4-2. Unranked Oliver Howard (Alabama) pitched a 2-0 shutout over Jude Randall (Oklahoma) at 170 pounds. At 182 pounds, D’Alcapon Veazy (Indiana) fell victim to Talon McCollom (Oklahoma) 4-2, and Braidon Woodward (New York), 7-6.
The heavyweight weight class was chaotic at Elite 8. Aiden Attao (Idaho) came in as the top dog in this affair. He defeated Ferrell 5-1, Spencer Langosa (Louisiana), 11-7, and Mark Effendian (Pennsylvania), 4-1 in OT, but lost to Daniel Herrera (Iowa), 4-3. Herrera, a two-time California state champ, who transferred from Palm Desert to Ames, Iowa, lost to Ferrell and was pinned by Ricky Thomas (Oklahoma). In addition to the win over Herrera, Ferrell beat Thomas, 8-3, but lost to Langosa, 7-0, and Effendian, 5-4. Langosa beat Effendian, 5-0.
The Ultimate Club Duals were held at the Nittany Valley Sports Center in State College, Pennsylvania. Edge Black, a team comprised of mostly New Jersey wrestlers, beat Meatballs, 28-24, in the finals. Meatballs’ roster was mostly Pennsylvania wrestlers. Edge Black downed New Jersey Black and Yellow in the semis, 41-18. In the quarterfinals, they took up took out Triumph Trained from New Jersey, 55-3.
The competition at Ultimate Club Duals was not as steep as what was encountered at the Elite 8 Duals. Going undefeated for Edge Black were Matthew Mulligan (103), Dalton Webber (129), Alessio Perentin (163), Louis Cerchio (175), and Vincenzo LaValle (190).
Posting 7-1 records were 94-pounder JoJo Burke, Cameron Sontz (109), Anthony DiAndrea (116) and Nick Campagna (155). Luke Geleta, who wrestled at 148, was 5-3 with all three of his losses coming to high-level opponents, Melvin Miller (Pennsylvania), 14-12, Chase Van Hoven (Virgina), 15-0, and Reagan Milheim (Pennsylvania), 8-4. While the Elite 8 Duals had many ranked versus ranked match-ups, the UCD did not have the multitude of ranked wrestlers in the field.
Notable results for Edge Black were Webber pinning Logan Roman (New Jersey), 3:48, and Perentin hanging losses on Pennsylvania wrestlers Devon Magro, 7-0, and Luke Sipes, 8-4.
Meatballs’ Brock Weiss (Pensylvania, 135) put his name on the map with wins over Patrick O’Keefe (New Jersey), 4:29, and Josh Vazquez (Illinois), 9-1. In a battle of Pennsylvania studs, Maddox Shaw defeated Dalton Perry, 7-1, at 141lbs.
