Top 25 Georgia high school girls basketball rankings (1/16/2024)

Grayson takes over No. 1 spot after routing nationally ranked IMG

There is a new No. 1 in the state of Georgia. After defeating nationally ranked IMG Academy by double digits, the Grayson Rams overtake Hebron Christian for the top spot in the state of Georgia.

The rest of the Top 5 remains the same with the Rams and Lions leading the pack by a wide margin.

GEORGIA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL POWER 25

1. Grayson (17-0)

There is a new No. 1 in the state of Georgia, and it’s the Grayson Rams. The margins between the Rams and last week’s first-place team Hebron Christian are razor thin. But what has the Rams swapping places with the Lions is their 73-56 win over IMG Academy three days ago. IMG Academy entered the matchup ranked inside the Top 10 nationally and the Lions don’t have a win of that magnitude on their schedule.

2. Hebron Christian (16-2)

The Lions slide back just one spot to No. 2, and it’s only because of Grayson’s win against nationally ranked IMG Academy. The Rams and Lions are the clear Top 2 teams in the state and it’s a shame that we won’t get to see these two teams clash on the hardwood this season. With both teams having goals of winning a state championship in their respective classifications, that should be the main thing both teams are looking at right now.

3. Mount Paran Christian (14-2)

The Eagles remain in the No. 3 spot in this week’s Power 25 despite suffering their third loss of the season. Hoover (Al.) got the best of them over the weekend, but considering Hoover’s stature in the state of Alabama, that isn’t a bad loss by any means. The Eagles have a great resume up until this point and currently holds a firm grasp on the No. 3 spot in the state of Georgia.

4. Wesleyan (14-2)

The Wolves got a scare last Friday night against an undefeated Pickens squad, but managed to pull out a 62-54 win. It was a game that the Wolves trailed big heading into the fourth quarter before out-scoring the Dragons 22-6 over the final eight minutes. It’s a quality win, nonetheless, and with their resume up until this point, the Wolves will remain ranked No. 4 in the state.

5. River Ridge (13-4)

The Knights picked up a big win over the weekend when they traveled to Buford and won the game 74-67. The win was very easily their biggest win of the season and the only thing keeping them from being ranked any higher is their loss to Wesleyan earlier in the season.

6. St. Francis (14-6)

The Knights are coming off of a loss, but it wasn’t any ordinary loss. They were beaten by nationally ranked IMG Academy 62-45, and that goes to show just how good Grayson and Hebron Christian are. The Knights are clear Top 10 team in the state and are the heavy favorites to win the Class A D-1 state championship.

7. Buford (15-2)

The Wolves saw their 14-game winning streak snapped by No. 4 River Ridge over the weekend, and it was a game the Wolves could have won. At this point, the Wolves might be playing for second place in Class 7A with Grayson sitting atop the list. But the Wolves are without a doubt a Top 10 team in the state of Georgia.

8. Union Grove (17-1)

The Wolverines just keep winning. Their only loss on the season remains against No. 2 Hebron Christian and they haven’t found themselves in many close games since. The Wolverines are rolling and that will likely continue.

9. Pickens (18-1)

The Dragons finally lost a game, and it came against No. 3 Wesleyan last Friday night. It was a game the Dragons would like to have back after leading 48-40 heading into the fourth quarter. But despite the loss, the Dragons proved worthy of their Top 10 pick. After coming in at No. 10 last week, the Dragons are up one spot to No. 9.

10. Baldwin (14-2)

The Braves ran their winning streak to 10 in a row on Monday, and they’re up one spot to No. 10 in this week’s rankings as a result. There’s a lot to like about the Braves, and considering their schedule the rest of the way, they’re going to be favored in every game.

11. McEachern (11-7)

The Indians have played a tough schedule up until this point and they appear to be back on track after blowing out Griffin 65-12 last Saturday night. They’re up to No. 11 in this week’s rankings.

12. Maris (17-1)

The War Eagles have run their winning streak up to nine in a row and come in at No. 12 in this week’s rankings. They beat Riverwood last Friday and followed that up with a 64-28 win against Lakeside.

13. North Paulding (16-4)

The Wolfpack has struggled mightily against the state’s best of the best, but they’re currently riding a 6-game winning streak and are up to No. 13 in this weeks’ rankings. Their last two wins have come against Hillgrove and Marietta.

14. Carrollton (15-2)

The Trojans come in at No. 14 in this week’s rankings after picking up three quality wins since last week. They beat Campbell, Rome and Woodward Academy to earn wins 13, 14 and 15 on the season.

15. Norcross (13-5)

The Blue Devils slide down to No. 15 in this week’s Power 25. They’ve played all of the state’s best for the most part and haven’t been able to find any wins. You’re not going to find too many more consistent programs in the state year in and year out, but this year, the Blue Devils probably don’t have enough to compete with the likes of Grayson and Buford.

16. Hardaway (15-4)

The Hawks’ winning streak now sits as 12 in a row after picking up three more wins since last week’s rankings. They come in at No. 16 after beating Shaw, Northview and Bainbridge, respectively.

17. North Forsyth (19-0)

The Raiders just keep on winning and are now 19-0 on the season after picking up three more blowout region wins against Gainesville, Habersham Central and Apalachee. They’re up to No. 17 in this week’s Power 25.

18. Langston Hughes (12-3)

The Panthers slide down to No. 18 after suffering a not-so-good loss to Webb (Tn.) last Saturday. They still have a quality schedule up until this point and will have a lot of winnable games coming up.

19. Galloway (10-7)

The Scots have seven losses, but they’ve played a tough schedule. Their most recent loss came against No. 6 St. Francis, and it was by just one point. The Scots might be underrated at this point with their seven losses.

20. Tift County (14-3)

The Blue Devils have now won six in a row and come in at No. 20 in this week’s rankings. Since last week, they’ve beaten Northside, Lee and Cook to earn wins 12, 13 and 14 on the season, respectively.

21. Maynard Jackson (14-1)

The Jaguars picked up two more wins, beating Tri-CIties and Midtown. Their win streak is up to seven in a row and they remain ranked No. 21 in the state.

22. Bradwell Institute (16-1)

The Tigers have won seven in a row and picked up wins 15 and 16 since last week’s rankings against Coffee and Statesboro.

23. Carver-Columbus (11-6)

The Tigers have gone 2-1 since last week’s rankings with their loss coming against No. 19 Galloway. Their two wins came against Crisp County and Thomasville.

24. Campbell (12-7)

The Spartans have won two in a row against Butler and Greenforest since last week’s rankings. They remain at No. 24 in this week’s rankings.

25. Thompson (15-2)

The Bulldogs suffered just their second loss of the season last week to Josey by one point, but have followed that up with a pair of wins against Putnam County and Butler. They will remain at No. 25 in this week’s rankings.
