Top 25 Georgia high school girls basketball rankings (1/26/2024)

Carrollton, on a 17-game winning streak, storms up to No. 11; Josey debuts

The biggest mover in this week's Power 25 belongs to the Carrollton Trojans, who are up to No. 11 after extending their winning streak to 17 in a row. They're just outside of the Top 10 and are trending in the right direction.

Wesleyan trades places with Mount Paran Christian for the No. 3 spot and Josey makes their debut in the Power 25.

GEORGIA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL POWER 25

1. Grayson

Who is going to beat Grayson in Class 7A this season? As of right now, it’s looking like nobody. After vaulting into the No. 1 spot last week, nationally-ranked Grayson picked up three more wins, including a 68-40 blowout of No. 11 McEachern, 7A’s No. 3 ranked team at the moment. They’re up to 20 wins on the season as a result.

2. Hebron Christian (18-2)

The odds of the Lions losing another game this season is slim to none. They’re into the heart of Region 8-AAA play, and there’s no team that can even come close to competing with them. In their last two games, they’ve out-scored Franklin County and Stephens County 178-39 to improve to 18-2 on the season.

3. Wesleyan (16-2)

The Wolves are up one spot to No. 3 in this week’s Power 25, and it’s due in large part to their showing against nationally ranked Montverde (Fl.) It was a 15-point loss, but it was a game well within reach for a large portion of the game. Montverde beat Hebron by nine and Wesleyan by 15, and with Wesleyan’s resume as a whole, they’re deserving of the No. 3 ranking in the state as of this week.

4. Mount Paran Christian (16-3)

Since losing to Hoover (Al.) last week, the Eagles have rebounded nicely with two blowout wins against Drew Charter and Washington. Much like Grayson in Class 7A and Hebron in Class 3A, the Eagles are the favorites to win the Class 2A state championship.

5. River Ridge (17-4)

The Knights have won nine games in a row dating back to Dec. 19, and it’s most recently included blowout wins against Galloway, Sequoyah and Allatoona. If the Knights want to make it 10 wins in a row, it will have to do it against current No. 6 St. Francis on Friday night in a much-anticipated non-region showdown.

6. St. Francis (15-6)

After losing to IMG Academy, the Knights got back in the win column last Friday night against Mount Bethel, defeating them 91-29. They will tangle with No. 5 River Ridge this Friday night which will be a great measuring stick to see if they’re deserving of their No. 6 ranking in the state.

7. Buford (17-2)

The Wolves are Grayson’s biggest threat to winning a Class 7A state championship, but that might not be saying too much given how dominant Grayson has been this season. The Wolves suffered a loss to No. 5 River Ridge earlier this month, but have rebounded with three region wins against Collins Hill, Dacula and Mountain View to improve to 18-2 on the season.

8. Union Grove (20-1)

The Wolverines joined Grayson this week as the first two teams to reach 20 wins on the season. Their winning streak now stands at nine in a row after beating Jones County, Northside and Locust Grove most recently.

9. Pickens (19-1)

The Dragons are knocking on the door of 20 wins and will likely get there Friday night with a win against Dawson County, who they’ve already beaten 68-41. Their lone loss came at the hands of No. 3 Wesleyan and that’s nothing to scoff at at this point in the season.

10. Baldwin (17-2)

After losing back-to-back games earlier this season to St. Francis and Norcross, the Braves have won 14 in a row and haven’t come particularly close to losing in any of those games. Right now, the Braves are the team to beat in Class 4A.

11. Carrollton (18-2)

The Trojans make the biggest jump in this week’s Power 25. They’re up to No. 11 after extending their winning streak to 17 in a row. They haven’t played the strongest of competition during that 17-game winning streak, but winning 17 games in a row isn’t an easy thing to do.

12. McEachern (12-8)

The Indians fall back one spot to No. 12 after losing their eighth game of the year. It came in blowout fashion to No. 1 Grayson, but eight losses is starting to look like a lot. They did earn a nice win over North Paulding last Friday which will keep them from slipping any further than 12th this week.

13. Marist (18-1)

The War Eagles fall back just one spot to No. 13, and that has little to do with what they accomplished on the court over the last week. They’ve now won 18 games, including 10 in a row and might be River Ridge’s biggest competition when it comes to competing for a Class 6A state championship this year.

14. North Paulding (16-5)

The Wolfpack come in at No. 14 in this week’s Power 25 after losing a close one on the road to McEachern 45-43 last Friday night. The loss moves them into second place in Region 3-7A behind the first-place Indians, but the two will meet again in their regular-season finale on Feb. 6.

15. Norcross (13-5)

The Blue Devils remain at No. 15 in this week’s rankings after picking up three blowout wins against Meadowcreek, Pebblebrook and Duluth. The Blue Devils have been great against bad teams and so-so against the state’s best. Their best win to date came against No. 10 Baldwin, but have losses against No. 12 McEachern, No. 5 River Ridge, No. 2 Hebron and No. 1 Grayson.

16. Hardaway (16-4)

The Hawks remain at No. 16 in this week’s rankings after extending their winning streak to 13 in a row Tuesday night against Russell County. They’ll look to extend their winning streak to 14 in a row Friday night against Cairo.

17. North Forsyth (20-0)

The Raiders are the third team in the Power 25 to reach 20 wins on the season, and they’ve done it without losing a game. It’s been no secret that the Raiders have played an easy schedule. They haven’t played a Top 15 team all season and might not until the playoffs.

18. Langston Hughes (15-3)

After falling back to No. 18 in last week’s Power 25, the Panthers remain in that spot this week after winning three more games. We will soon find out just how good they are, however when they tangle with a red-hot Carrollton squad on Saturday.

19. Galloway (11-8)

Rankings 18-25 start to get a tad bit messy, but for now wer’re going to keep Galloway in its 18th spot in the Power 25. They were blown out by 40 points to No. 5 River Ridge last Saturday, which isn’t a good look. But it did come against a Top 5 team in the state. They very nearly beat No. 6 St. Francis and have a quality in over Carver-Columbus.

20. Tift County (14-3)

The Blue Devils haven’t gotten much love on other rankings around the state, but they’ve proven to be a quality team so far this year. They’re 16-3 and have won eight in a row. Their biggest win to date came against No. 14 North Paulding, and they were beaten by just one point against North Forsyth.

21. Maynard Jackson (17-1)

There is a lot to like about the Jaguars this season. They’re 17-1 on the season and have won 10 in a row. They haven’t played a tough schedule up until this point, but they’re more than deserving a spot in the Power 25 right now.

22. Carver-Columbus (13-6)

After falling back to No. 23 in last week’s rankings, they’re back up one spot to No. 22 after picking up wins against Monroe and Dougherty. Their 13-point loss to Galloway isn’t looking so great right now, but they have quality wins up until this point.

23. Campbell (14-7)

The Spartans are up one spot to No. 23 in this week’s rankings after extending their winning streak to four in a row. It’s going to take an upset to win their region with Carrollton currently atop it, but the Spartans have been a spunky team all year.

24. Josey (17-2)

Making their debut in the Power 25 this week are the Eagles, who are currently 17-2 on the season and are riding an 8-game winning streak. Class 2A is relatively open this year and right now, they’re the second best team in that classification.

25. Thomson (17-2)

For the third week in a row, the Bulldogs come in at No. 25. They’re 17-2 and are slotted in slightly behind Josey, who beat them by one point earlier this month to take over first place in Region 4-AA. That region could go either way at this point with the two meeting again on Feb. 6.
