Top 25 Georgia high school girls basketball rankings (2/2/2024)

A major overhaul has to come to the SBLive Sports Georgia Girls Basketball Power 25

There were major changes to this week's Georgia Girls Basketball Power 25.

From teams falling 10 spots, to some rearranging in the Top 10, this week featured one of, if not the biggest overhaul to the top 25 teams in the state of Georgia as the month of January comes to a close.

1. Grayson (22-0)

The Rams are closing in on a perfect regular season after improving to 22-0 this week. They blew out two more Region 4-7A foes Brookwood and Archer and have no out-scored region opponents 486-238.

2. Hebron Christian (20-2)

The Lions improved to 20-2 this week after dominating Oconee and Hart County. They won’t finish their regular season undefeated, but they will finish the regular season undefeated against teams from the state of Georgia.

3. Mount Paran Christian (17-3)

The Eagles dropped back one spot to No. 4 last week, and they’re quickly back up to No. 3 after Wesleyan suffered its third loss of the season. The Eagles haven’t played the toughest of competition as of late, but their overtime loss to No. 1 Grayson is more than enough to rank them as the third best team in the state.

4. River Ridge (19-4)

The Knights are up one spot to No. 4 in this week’s rankings after beating a Top 10 team in St. Francis. Their resume speaks for itself. With wins against St. Francis and Buford, and a slim 4-point loss to Wesleyan way back on Dec. 9, that’s enough to move them into the No. 4 spot based on how they’re playing today.

5. Buford (20-2)

The Wolves are one of the biggest movers this week, jumping two spots into fifth. That might not sound like a lot, but given how razor thin the margins are between these teams around them, that’s a big move. They knocked off previous No. 3 Wesleyan last week and are now 20-2 on the season.

6. Wesleyan (17-3)

In a tough break, the Wolves fall three spots down to No. 6 after losing to then No. 7 Buford 70-65 last week. An argument can easily be made for them to be ranked ahead of River Ridge given their victory over them in early December, but with their recent loss to Buford, and River Ridge’s recent win over Buford, someone has to take the fall and this week it's the Wolves.

7. St. Francis (15-7)

The Knights fall just one spot after losing a close one to River Ridge last Friday night. Teams ranked 3-7 in this week’s Power 25 are all very evenly matched, in our opinions. While the Top 2 spots are more than etched in stone with Grayson and Hebron Christian, teams ranked 3-7 can overtake one another on any given week.

8. Union Grove (23-1)

Since losing to No. 2 Hebron Christian back on Dec. 16, the Wolverines have gone on a 12-game winning streak and have looked really good. They’ve gutted out some wins against good opponents, and have dominated teams that they should.

9. Baldwin (20-2)

The Braves joined the 20-win club this week and have now won 16 games in a row dating back to Dec. 2. There’s a lot to like about the Braves in Class 4A and they’re up one spot to No. 9 in this week’s Power 25.

10. Carrollton (21-2)

Make that 20 wins in a row for the Trojans, who last lost a game on Nov. 25 to No. 1 Grayson. They’ve moved themselves into the Top 10 for the first time this season and they’ve established themselves as the third best team in Class 7A at this moment.

11. Marist (20-1)

The War Eagles also joined the 20-win club this week and extended their winning streak to 12 in a row in the process. Right now, they’re the clear No. 2 team in Class 6A, trailing only No. 4 River Ridge, who won the state championship last season.

12. Norcross (18-5)

The Blue Devils are up three spots to No. 12 in this week’s rankings after extending their winning streak to five in a row. This Blue Devils team isn’t as good as the ones in recent memory, but it’s still one of the best the state has to offer and will be a tough out in the playoffs.

13. Langston Hughes (17-4)

The Panthers are the biggest movers this week, up five spots to No. 13. And that comes after loss. They suffered a 1-point loss to Carrollton last week, proving that they belong as one of the state’s best.

14. Hardaway (19-4)

The Hawks just keep winning. They’ve extended their winning streak to 16 in a row and are up two spots to No. 14 in this week’s Power 25. Their four losses are nothing to hang their heads about. They came against No. 1 Grayson, No. 8 Union Grove, No. 12 Norcross and a really solid Cross Creek team.

15. North Forsyth (23-0)

The Raiders still haven’t played anyone this season, and won’t until at least the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Are they the 15th best team in the state? Probably not. But with some teams around them losing games they shouldn’t, we’re going to give them the benefit of the doubt with their perfect 23-0 record and move them into the No. 15 spot in this week’s Power 25.

16. McEachern (14-9)

The Indians' slide back continues. After falling back to No. 12 last week, they’re down four more spots to No. 16 after losing to Marietta this week. It’s not a terrible loss considering Marietta’s 16-6 record, but it’s still a game they should have won.

17. Pickens (20-2)

The Dragons are the biggest fallers this week, coming in at No. 17 after being ranked 9th last week. That came as a result of losing to Dawson County, a solid team in Class 3A, but a team they had already beaten by almost 30 points earlier this season.

18. Galloway (12-8)

The Scots are up one spot in this week’s rankings to No. 18 after getting back in the win column with two blowout victories. They have eight losses, but they’ve played one of the toughest schedules in the state that includes games against No. 1 Grayson, No. 4 River Ridge and No. 7 St. Francis, who they only lost two by one point.

19. Maynard Jackson (19-1)

There is a lot to like about the Jaguars with the exception of their strength of schedule. It isn’t good, but their 19-1 record is hard to dismiss. They’re up two spots to No. 19 in this week’s Power 25.

20. Carver-Columbus (14-6)

The Tigers come in at No. 20 in this week’s Power 25, up two spots from last week. They’ve won five games in a row, and their last three in-state losses have come against teams ranked ahead of them in No. 5 Buford, No. 14 Hardaway and No. 18 Galloway, respectively.

21. Campbell (15-7)

The Spartans are up two spots to No. 21 in this week’s Power 25 after extending their winning streak to five in a row. Four of their seven losses have come against teams ranked higher than them in No. 9 Baldwin, No. 10 Carrollton, No. 14 Hardaway and No. 20 Carver-Columbus.

22. Josey (19-2)

After making their season debut in the Power 25 last week at No. 24, the Eagles are up two spots to No. 22 after improving to 19-2 on the season. They also extended their winning streak to 10 in a row.

23. New Manchester (16-4)

The first team to make their season-debut in the Power 25 this week is New Manchester, who are winners of six in a row. They’ve played a quality schedule and all three of their in-state losses have come against teams ranked ahead of them in No. 10 Carrollton, No. 13 Langston Hughes and No. 18 Galloway, respectively

24. North Paulding (17-6)

The biggest faller this week is North Paulding, who slips back 10 spots to No. 24 after suffering a bad loss to Hillgrove. That loss was a major head-scratcher considering Hillgrove’s 9-14 record.

25. Thompson (19-2)

The Bulldogs continue to hold onto the 25th and final spot after improving to 19-2 on the season. When it comes to teams in Class 2A, the Bulldogs are going to make some noise in the playoffs.
