MACON, GEORGIA – The Paideia boys basketball entered the third quarter of Saturday's GHSA Class 1A Division boys basketball state championship game, at the Macon Centerplex, on a run.

It didn't last.

After outscoring Mount Vernon 16-9 in the second quarter to build a 23-18 lead, the Pythons went cold from the field and got out-scored 17-4 by the Mustangs in the pivotal period and Mount Vernon was able to make the eight point working margin stand up for a 48-40 victory.

Mount Vernon got double-digit points from three of its five starters, led by 18 from Xavier Shegog, who also had 7 rebounds.

KJ Harris and Harrison Sha'Yah Goba each scored 10 points and Harris had a game-high 8 rebounds. Dennis Scott III added 9 points and 5 rebounds for the Mustangs, while Gabe Alterman had 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Tristan Mitchell was the high-point man for Paideia, scoring 16 points, while CJ Harper and Jayden Clay combined for 12 points.
