Illinois boys individual wrestling championships updates

The Illinois boys individual wrestling championships are underway at the State Farm Center in Champaign.

Stay with SBLive Sports for updates throughout the three days of action.

The competition kicked off on Thursday with Class 1A to be followed by Class 2A and then 3A. All three classes had first-round matches on Thursday, with 1A and 2A also completing quarterfinal matches. The 3A quarterfinals will be held Friday.

CLASS 1A FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

106 pounds: Leroy junior Brady Mouser, Marian Central sophomore Austin Hagevold, Johnsburg freshman Eric Bush, De La Salle sophomore Jeremiah Lawrence, Vandalia freshman Max Philpot, Seneca freshman Terry Raiden, Coal City freshman Owen Petersen and Princeton sophomore Augustus Swanson advanced to the quarterfinal round. 

113 pounds: Marian Central senior Anthony Alanis, Olympia junior Dylan Eimer, Illini Bluffs senior Hunter Robbins, Carlyle freshman Preston Waughtel, Coal City freshman Cooper Morris, Benton freshman Cohen Sweely, Oregon freshman Nelson Benesh, Peoria Notre Dame junior Ian Akers advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Waughtel, the Carlyle freshman, is 47-0 this season. Robbins finished second in 1A at 106 pounds a year ago. 

120 pounds: Carlyle junior Tyson Waughtel, Riverdale sophomore Dean Wainwright, West Latham junior Logan Roberts, Coal City junior Culan Lindemuth, Marian Catholic junior Brayden Teunissen, Anna-Jonesboro junior Drew Sadler, Oblong senior Ian Rosborough and Unity Christian sophomore Clinton VerHeecke advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Tyson Waughtel (48-0) and VerHeecke (40-0) are both undefeated. Waughtel won the 1A title at 113 pounds a year ago after winning the championship at 106 as a freshman in 2022. Clinton VerHeecke finished third in 1A at 113 pounds. 

126 pounds: Unity Christian sophomore Garrett VerHeecke, Althoff junior Brenden Rayl, Auburn senior Anthony Ruzic, Wheaton Academy sophomore Lincoln Hoger, Coal City sophomore Brody Widlowski, Tolono Unity sophomore Hunter Shike, North Boone junior Gavin Ekberg and Harrisburg senior Tony Keene all advanced.

VerHeecke (41-0) is undefeated this season.

Wenzel, who is undefeated at 33-0, is ranked 25th at 215 pounds in the SBLive national wrestling rankings. He won the 1A title at 220 pounds a year ago after winning the 195-pound championship as a sophomore in 2022. 

285 pounds: Roxana senior James Herring, Leo junior Nicholas Armour, Hope Academy junior Roy Phelps, St. Francis sophomore Jaylen Torres, De La Salle junior David McCarthy, Althoff junior Jason Dowell, Princeton junior Cade Odell and Peoria Notre Dame senior Michael McLaughlin all advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Dowell, a Division I football prospect, finished third in 1A at 285 pounds a year ago while at Cahokia High School. 

CLASS 1A QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

106 pounds: Hagevold, Bush, Philpot and Swanson advanced to the semifinals.

113 pounds: Alanis, Preston Waughtel, Sweely and Akers advanced.

Preston Waughtel, the Carlyle freshman, improved to 48-0 on the season with a major-decision win over Robbins, who finished second in 1A at 106 pounds a year ago.

120 pounds: Tyson Waughtel, Roberts, Teunissen and Clinton VerHeecke advanced to the semifinals.

Tyson Waughtel, who won the 1A title at 113 pounds a year ago after winning the championship at 106 as a freshman in 2022. improved to 49-0. 

Clinton VerHeecke, who finished third in 1A at 113 pounds, improved to 41-0.

126 pounds: Garrett VerHeecke, Ruzic, Widlowski and Keene advanced to the semifinals. VerHeecke improved to 42-0 on the season.

132 pounds: Williams, Jennings, Bissey and Finch advanced. 

138 pounds: Tieffel, Corder, Hinton and Christiansen advanced. 

Tieffel, who won the 1A championship at 138 pounds a year ago, improved to 53-0 this season. 

144 pounds: Rude, Inman, edwards and Carroll advanced. 

Rude, who was second in 1A at 138 pounds a year ago, improved to 44-1.

150 pounds: Bishop, Smith, Wise and Brewer advanced. 

Bishop improved to 45-1.

157 pounds: Fox, Mastny, Larkin and Capansky advanced to the semifinals. 

Fox improved to 49-0.

165 pounds: Astacio, Benson, Brewick and Delaney advanced.

175 pounds: Carter, Larson, Watkins and Zamora advanced to the semifinals.

190 pounds: Eastin, Tidwell, Cuppernell and Savage advanced.

215 pounds: Wenzel, Beers, Champlin and Peura advanced to the semifinals.

Wenzel, a two-time state champion who is ranked 25th at 215 pounds in the SBLive national wrestling rankings, improved to 34-0. 

285 pounds: Herring, Torres, Dowell and Odell advanced.

106 pounds: St. Patrick sophomore Daniel Goodwin, Oak Forest freshman Jacob Sebek, Streator senior Nicholas Pollett, Montini Catholic freshman Allen Woo, St. Rita sophomore Jack Hogan, Grayslake Central freshman Vince DeMarco, Wauconda junior Gavin Rockey and Morris sophomore Owen Sater advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Woo is ranked 14th in the SBLive national wrestling rankings at 106 pounds.

113 pounds: Rock Island senior Truth Vesey, Normal Community West junior Dylan McGrew, Kennedy junior Victor Alvarado, Montini Catholic freshman Mikey Malizzio, Champaign Central freshman Talin Baker, Niles Notre Dame junior John Sheehy, Yorkville Christian junor Aiden Larsen and Riverside Brookfield junior Edgar Mosquera all advanced.

Vesey finished fifth in 2A at 113 pounds a year ago. 

120 pounds: Chatham Glenwood senior Drew Davis, Kaneland senior Kamron Scholl, Antioch junior Gavin Hanrahan, Jacksonville sophomore Deshawn Armstrong, Galesburg senior Rocky Almendarez, Civic Memorial junior Bradley Ruckman, Marion junior Riddick Cook and IC Catholic junior Deven Casey advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Davis is undefeated this season at 40-0 after winning the 2A title at 113 pounds a year ago. He will face Scholl (45-1) in the quarterfinals. 

126 pounds: Montini Catholic junior Josh Vazquez, Washington senior Eli Gonzalez, Civic Memorial senior Caleb Scott, Providence Catholic freshman Tommy Banas, Rochelle junior Xavier Villalobos, Deerfield senior Luke Reddy, Grayslake Central senior Tyler Weidman and Triad senior Colby Crouch all advanced.

Vazquez finished second in 2A at 120 pounds a year ago.

Shipp, who is undefeated at 42-0 this season, won the 2A title at 138 pounds a year ago.

Medlin, who finished third in 2A at 126 pounds as a freshman, is ranked 19th nationally at 138 pounds in the SBLive rankings.

144 pounds: Washington junior Peyton Cox, Riverside Brookfield senior Josh Gonzalez, Champaign Central junior Ron Baker III, St. Patrick senior Nikolas Karamaniolas, St. Rita senior Sean Larkin, IC Catholic senior Pat Mullen, Rockford East sophomore Dana Wicksonand Mattoon senior Korbin Bateman advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Bateman is undefeated at 43-0. Cox finished second in 2A at 132 pounds a year ago.  

150 pounds: Geneseo junior Zachary Montez, IC Catholic sophomore Brody Kelly, Wauconda senior Cole Porten, Plano junior Caidan Ronning, Lemont senior Noah O'Connor, Mattoon senior Aidan Blackburn, Highland junior Tyson Rakers and Montini Catholic senior David Mayora all advanced.

Marquez finished second in 2A at 195 pounds a year ago.

Calcagno is ranked 17th nationally at 215 pounds in the SBLive rankings. 

285 pounds: Champaign Centennial senior Jack Barnhart, Rockford East senior Lee Smith, East Peoria junior Jose Del Toro, East St. Louis senior Mekhi McDowell, Lemont senior Alex Pasquale, Cary-Grove junior Lucas Burton, Niles Notre Dame junior Scott Cook and Crystal Lake South senior Andy Burburija advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Barnhart (41-0) and Burburija (33-0) are both undefeated and on opposite sides of the bracket. Burburija finished fourth in 2A at 285 a year ago. 


CLASS 2A QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

106 pounds: Goodwin, Woo, Hogan and Rockey advanced to the semifinals.

113 pounds: Vesey, Malizzio, Sheehy and Mosquera advanced.

120 pounds: Davis, Hanrahan, Almendarez and Casey advanced to the semifinals.

Davis, who won the 2A title at 113 a year ago, improved to 41-0 after defeating Scholl (45-2) by a 15-4 major decision.

126 pounds: Vazquez, Banas, Villalobos and Crouch advanced. 

Vazquez, who finished second in 2A at 120 pounds a year ago, moved on with a 1-0 decision over Gonzalez. Villalobos (42-1) and Crouch (38-1) will meet in the semifinals.

132 pounds: Shipp, Samayoa, Edwards and Albino advanced to the semifinals.

Shipp, the 2A champion at 138 pounds a year ago, improved to 43-0.

138 pounds: Medlin, Perez, Spaulding and White advanced.

Medlin, who finished third in 2A at 126 pounds as a freshman, is ranked 19th nationally at 138 pounds in the SBLive rankings and improved to 43-4.

144 pounds: Cox, Karamaniolas, Larkin and Bateman advanced to the semifinals.

Cox, who finished second in 2A at 132 pounds a year ago, improved to 25-1. Bateman improved to 44-0.

150 pounds: Kelly, Porten, O'Connor and Mayora advanced.

157 pounds: Griffin, Cheshier, Grasser and Digby advanced to the semifinals.

Griffin, a Civic Memorial senior, defeated Konder, a Montini Catholic senior who is ranked 21st at 157 pounds in the SBLive national rankings, by a 9-2 decision to improve to 47-2 on the season.

165 pounds: Mueller, McConnell, Dvoriannikov and Kirts advanced.

175 pounds: Jens, Hulet, Shaw and Overton advanced to the semifinals. 

Jens, who won the 2A title at 182 pounds a year ago, improved to 39-1.

190 pounds: Marquez, Amatore, Wiezorek and Parks advanced.

Marquez, who finished second in 2A at 195 pounds a year ago, improved to 41-2.

215 pounds: Morris, Cooley, Zobrist and Calcagno advanced to the semifinals.

Calcagno, ranked 17th nationally at 215 pounds in the SBLive rankings, improved to 49-4.

285 pounds: Barnhart, Del Toro, Pasquale and Burburija advanced.

Barnhart improved to 42-0 and Burburija, who finished fourth in 2A at 285 a year ago, improved to 34-0. 


CLASS 3A FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

106 pounds: Sandburg junior Rocco Hayes, Hononegah freshman Rocco Cassioppi, Joliet Catholic freshman Luke Foster, Proviso West freshman Jamiel Castleberry, Warren Township freshman Caleb Noble, River Forest freshman Michael Rundell, Mt. Carmel junior Kavel Moore and Normal junior Caden Correll all advanced to the quarterfinals.

Hayes (45-1) and Cassioppi (41-3) are ranked sixth and seventh nationally in the SBLive rankings at 106 pounds and will meet in the quarterfinals. Hayes finished third in 3A at 106 pounds a year ago. 

Noble (39-3), who is ranked eighth in the SBLive national rankings, is in the other half of the bracket and could potentially face the winner in the championship match. 

Correll finished fifth at 106 in 3A a year ago as a sophomore.

113 pounds: St. Charles East sophomore Dom Munaretto, Mt. Carmel freshman Justin Williamson, Stagg senior Jaime Corral, Hononegah freshman Bruno Cassioppi, Marmion sophomore Nicholas Garcia, Hersey junior Anthony Orozco-Diaz, Warren Township junior Jonathan Marquez and Plainfield North junior Maddox Garbis all advanced. 

Munaretto (45-2), who won the 3A title at 106 pounds a year ago, is ranked fifth at 113 pounds in the SBLive national rankings. Garcia (42-7), who finished fourth at 106 pounds a year ago, is ranked 12th. 

120 pounds: Maine South senior Teddy Flores, Normal junior Cole Gentsch, Romeoville senior Brian Farley, Glenbard North junior Kalani Khiev, Batavia senior Ino Garcia, Loyola Academy sophomore Gavin Pardilla, Schaumburg junior Brady Phelps and Joliet Catholic sophomore Jason Hampton advanced to the quarterfinals.

126 pounds: Mt. Carmel junior Seth Mendoza, Fremd sophomore Drew Fifield, Elk Grove senior Grant Madl, Andrew senior Max Siegel, Hersey senior Abdullokh Khakimov, Marist junior Michael Esteban, Joliet Catholic freshman Adante Washington and Glenbard North senior Christian Chavez all advanced to the quarterfinals.

Davino (47-0) is ranked first at 132 pounds in the SBLive national rankings. He won the 3A title at 126 pounds a year ago and won the 120-pound championship as a sophomore in 2022.

138 pounds: St. Charles East senior Tyler Guerra, Marmion Academy sophomore Zach Stewart, Sandburg junior Ryan Hinger, York sophomore Frank Nitti, Marist junior Donavon Allen, Oak Park River Forest junior Joseph Knackstedt, DeKalb junior Hudson Ikens and Lockport sophomore Justin Wardlow advanced to the quarterfinals.

Guerra (46-1), who finished second at 138 pounds a year ago, is ranked 10th at 138 pounds in the SBLive national rankings.

144 pounds: St. Charles East senior Jayden Colon, Mt. Carmel junior Jairo Acuna, Marmion Academy sophomore Ashton Hobson, Joliet West junior Carson Weber, Batavia senior Aidan Huck, DaKalb senior Mekhi Cave, Pekin senior RaMez Watson and Fremd junior Evan Gosz all advanced to the quarterfinals.

Colon (38-5) won the 3A championship at 145 pounds last year after winning the 2A title at 145 as a sophomore in 2022. Gosz is undefeated this season with a 35-0 record.

150 pounds: Marist junior Will Denny, McHenry senior Pedro Jimenez, Joliet Catholic senior Connor Cumbee, St. Charles East senior Gavin Connolly, Barrington senior Rhenzo Augusto, Oak Park River Forest sophomore David Ogunsanya, Lane senior Fernando Lopez and Yorkville junior Jack Ferguson advanced to the quarterfinals.

Denny (39-4) is ranked 11th at 150 pounds in the SBLive national rankings.

157 pounds: Warren Township sophomore Aaron Stewart, Geneva senior Peyton Marzen, West Aurora senior Noah Quintana, Huntley freshman Radic Dvorak, Wheaton North junior Thomas Fulton, Hononegah freshman Brody Sendele, Fremd senior Ryan Muslimovic and Mt. Carmel senior Edmund Enright all advanced.

Stewart (40-2) is ranked 10th in the SBLive national rankings at 157 pounds, while Enright (37-3) is ranked 20th. Enright finished second at 152 pounds a year ago and Stewart finished third. 

165 pounds: Quincy senior Owen Uppinghouse, Lyons senior Gunnar Garelli, St. Charles East junior Anthony Gutierrez, Warren Township sophomore Royce Lopez, Glenbard West senior Collin Carrigan, Joliet Catholic senior Max Corral, Prospect senior Connor Munn and DeKalb senior Jacob Luce advanced to the quarterfinals.

Uppinghouse is 52-0 this season after finishing third at 160 pounds a year ago. He will face Garelli (45-2), who is ranked 22nd in the SBLive national rankings at 165 pounds, in the quarterfinals. Garelli finished fourth at 160 pounds last year.

Carrigan is ranked 21st in the SBLive national rankings. 

175 pounds: Yorkville junior Luke Zook, Marist junior Ricky Ericksen, Wheaton Warrenville South senior Sedeeq Al Obaidi, Libertyville senior Matt Kubas, St. Charles East senior Brody Murray, Bradley Bourbonnais senior AJ Mancilla, Quincy senior Bryor Newbold and Mt. Carmel senior Colin Kelly advanced.

Kelly (40-1), who finished second at 170 pounds a year ago after winning the title at 160 pounds as a sophomore in 2022, is ranked sixth in the SBLive national rankings at 175 pounds. Zook finished third at 170 pounds a year ago as a sophomore.

190 pounds: Prospect sophomore Jaxon Penovich, Mt. Carmel senior Rylan Breen, Downers Grove South senior Matt Lapacek, Warren Township senior Jeremija Hixson, Marist senior Conor Phelan, Loyola Academy senior Quinn Herbert, Hersey senior Anthony Cambria and Joliet Catholic junior Nico Ronchetti advanced to the quarterfinals. 

Phelan (37-8) finished third at 182 pounds a year ago. Penovich (43-3) finished fifth at 195 pounds a year ago as a freshman. 

215 pounds: Naperville Central senior Nicolas Besteiro, Geneva junior Joe Pettit, Libertyville senior Owen McGrory, Marmion Academy sophomore Joseph Favia, Oak Park River Forest junior Eric Harris, Normal senior Cooper Caraway, Yorkville senior Ben Alvarez and Loyola Academy sophomore Kai Calcutt all advanced.

Alvarez (43-5) won the championship at 220 pounds a year ago and defeated Calcutt (28-4) in the title match. Those two will now meet in the quarterfinals.

Caraway (44-3) finished sixth at 220 pounds a year ago.

285 pounds: Joliet Catholic senior Dillan Johnson, Huntley senior Markos Mihalopoulos, Mundelein junior Abisai Hernandez, Lincoln-Way West senior Nick Kavooras, Round Lake junior William Cole, Belleville East sophomore Jonathan Rulo, Joliet West senior Wyatt Schmitt and Hinsdale Central senior Marko Ivanisevic.

Johnson (36-1), who will play football and wrestle at the University of Wisconsin, is seeking his third state championship in three seasons. He won the 2A title at 285 pounds the past two seasons and is ranked second in the SBLive national rankings.

Rulo, undefeated at 33-0 this season, finished second in 3A at 285 pounds a year ago. Schmitt (33-2) finished fourth at 285 pounds last year. Ivanisevic (38-2) finished fifth at 220 pounds the past two years.
