SBLive Iowa Top 25 high school softball rankings: Teams make moves to top 10 in first week
Some new teams surged into the top 10 after a busy opening week of softball in Iowa.
A look at the Top 25 after the first week:
1. Davenport Assumption (3-0)
The preseason No. 1 in Class 3A routed Western Dubuque in the opener.
2. Mount Vernon (5-0)
The Mustangs recorded doubleheader sweeps of Vinton-Shellsburg and Maquoketa.
3. North Linn (7-0)
NL outscored their opponents 66-6 during the week.
4. Waukee Northwest (4-0)
The first-year program swept Ankeny and Des Moines East.
5. Johnston (4-0)
A big opening week, with two wins over Ottumwa and single wins over Ankeny Centennial and Bettendorf.
6. Iowa City Liberty (6-0)
Mischa Reiners hit .500 for the week.
7. Winterset (3-0)
The preseason No. 1 in Class 4A defeated North Polk, I-35 and Earlham.
8. ADM (5-0)
The Tigers averaged more than nine runs a game during the week.
9. Ankeny Centennial (3-1)
The only loss of the week was to Johnston.
10. Fort Dodge (3-1)
Last year’s state champion stumbled to West Des Moines Valley in the second game of a doubleheader.
11. Clear Creek-Amana (4-0)
The Clippers swept Marion and Vinton-Shellsburg.
12. Muscatine (2-0)
The Muskies’ opening week included a win over Oskaloosa.
13. Southeast Polk (2-0)
The Rams get Johnston on Tuesday.
14. Central Springs (3-0)
Cooper Klaahsen pitched shutouts against Saint Ansgar and North Butler.
15. North Union (4-0)
North Union outscored its four opponents 39-3.
16. Sigourney (4-0)
Outscored its opponents 53-4. Carly Goodwin struck out 45 in the four games.
17. Waukee (2-1)
Waukee swept Des Moines Hoover in the opener, and lost to Dallas Center-Grimes.
18. Lisbon (2-1)
Lisbon lost to Mount Vernon in the opener, then posted shutouts of Columbus and Louisa-Muscatine.
19. Williamsburg (5-1)
Lost the opener to Center Point-Urbana, then won five consecutive games.
20. Wayne (3-0)
The opening week included a win over Twin Cedars.
21. West Des Moines Valley (3-1)
The week included a split with highly regarded Fort Dodge.
22. West Burlington-Notre Dame (4-0)
The Falcons posted three shutouts in the opening week.
23. Newell-Fonda (5-2)
A busy week concluded with three wins in the Kingsley-Pierson tournament.
24. Southeast Warren (3-1)
The only loss of the week was to ADM.
25. Twin Cedars (2-1)
Lost to Wayne in the opener.
