WATERLOO - Half of the four trophies handed out on the final day of the Iowa high school state bowling tournament are staying in Waterloo, albeit on opposite sides of the city.
The Waterloo West boys’ team captured a Class 3A state title at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo on Thursday while Waterloo East senior Kadence Hyde won the girls’ individual championship in 2A at Maple Lanes.
Waterloo West’s girls’ team went into the eight-team bracket tournament as the top seed in 3A, but fell to eighth-seeded Cedar Rapids Kennedy in four games of a best-of-five series. Kennedy would be defeated in five games to eventual team champion Dubuque Senior. The Rams beat the No. 2 seed Ottumwa 3-2 in the finals.
Davenport North took the Waterloo West boys to five games in the 3A boys championship, but to no avail the top-seeded Warhawks won the decisive fifth game, 203-180.
The boys’ individual title in 2A went to Trey VanWyk of Oskaloosa. The sophomore went into the eight-bowler head-to-head tournament as the No. 3 seed. He took down Ethan Potter of Western Dubuque and Grady Brauer of Decorah before taking down top-seeded Caleb Hodtwalker of Lewis Central in the championship round, 248-230.
En route to winning the 3A team title, Waterloo West scored the top seed in the bracket tournament by posting the top 15-Baker game score with a 2147 to edge Southeast Polk’s 2143. Davenport Central checked in at third (2126).
Waterloo West needed four games in each of the first two rounds while taking out No. 8 seed Marshalltown and fourth-seeded Cedar Rapids Kennedy.
The Dubuque Senior girls were the underdog in every round of the bracket tournament as the Rams entered as the No. 5 seed. Senior swept Cedar Rapids Prairie in the opening round, then prevailed versus top-seeded Cedar Rapids Jefferson in five games to reach the finals, where Ottumwa fell in five games.
Hodtwalker recorded a three-game series of 750 to beat out Brauer’s 738 for the top seed in the boys’ 2A tournament.
Hyde slid by Central DeWitt senior Jenna Edwards in the 2A girls’ finals, 216-204. En route to her state championship, Hyde took out Rebecca Bruening of Decorah and Keokuk’s Rachel Moore, with neither opponent coming within 25 pins of the top seed.
Entering the individual tournament, Hyde’s three-game series of 680 was easily the top seed, as Lewis Central provided the next two highest seeds in Aleesha Oden (665) and Kate Reed (646).
It’s the second consecutive individual trophy in 2A for the Waterloo East girls as last season’s tournament went to Malorie Cary.
