Iowa high school boys basketball Top 25 rankings (2/6/2024)
The top five teams in the rankings remain the same after going undefeated last week, but most of the remaining teams in our all-class Top 25 suffered at least one loss.
Two teams dropped out as Class 1A Bellevue Marquette suffered its first loss of the season to North Linn, which debuts. Decorah also drops out after losing to Cascade and is replaced by Waukee Northwest.
1. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (17-0)
The unbeaten Cougars are led by Trey McKowen (13.4 points, 4.5 assists) and Joe Bean (11.8 points). They will put their undefeated record on the line Tuesday at Iowa City West in a battle of our top two teams.
2. Iowa City West (15-1)
Jack McCaffery (15.8 points), Jacob Koch (12.8) and Kareem Earl (10.2) lead the Trojans into a huge tilt Tuesday vs. top-ranked Kennedy.
3. Sioux City East (18-2)
The Black Raiders posted statement wins over a pair two of the best teams in western Iowa, beating Council Bluffs Lincoln (86-59) and defending Class 2A state runner up Western Christian (77-55). Fitzy Grant leads East with 15.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
4. Dubuque Senior (15-1)
The Rams won three more games last week behind Jacob Williams (17.6) and Tevin Schultz (13.4).
5. West Des Moines Valley (13-4)
The defending 4A state champions beat Ankeny 67-48 and Southeast Polk 84-60 to hold steady at No. 5.
6. Cedar Falls (14-3)
The Tigers rolled to double-digit wins over three teams with losing records.
7. Dallas Center-Grimes (14-3)
The Mustangs won all three games last week, including a 68-49 shellacking of Norwalk and a 55-48 victory over always-good Pella.
8. Clear Lake (17-0)
The 3A Lions are the only non-Class 4A team in our top 10 as they rolled to three more victories last week, including a 68-47 triumph over Algona – a state tournament team last year.
9. Waukee (13-6)
The Warriors pounded Indianola 85-56 but then stubbed their toe against Johnston 66-45.
10. Ankeny Centennial (12-5)
The Jaguars blew out a good Des Moines North squad 82-51 but then lost to city rival Ankeny 76-63.
11. Norwalk (12-3)
The Warriors were handled by Dallas Center-Grimes 68-49 but bounced back with a 59-37 victory over Oskaloosa.
12. Waverly-Shell Rock (15-2)
The 3A Go-Hawks are on a 15-game winning streak after a pair of blowout victories.
The Falcons took care of business, beating Central DeWitt 62-56 and Davenport North 79-61.
14. Pleasant Valley (12-4)
The Spartans won both games last week, knocking off North Scott 53-36 and Davenport Assumption 65-47.
15. Adel ADM (15-1)
The 3A Tigers have won 15 consecutive games behind the scoring of sophomore Hudson Lorensen and senior Adam Bryte, who both average 15.9 points.
16. Carroll Kuemper Catholic (16-2)
The 2A Knights rolled to a pair of victories, including a 75-63 win at Harlan.
17. Des Moines Roosevelt (15-4)
The Rough Riders blew out Mason City 93-51 and 10-5 Ottumwa 78-33.
18. Solon (17-0)
The 3A Spartans remain unbeaten after posting double digit wins over West Delaware and Mount Vernon.
19. North Scott (13-4)
The Lancers lost to a pair of solid teams in Pleasant Valley (53-36) and Bettendorf (73-55).
20. West Lyon (18-1)
The 2A Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season, falling 61-58 to Unity Christian, after winning their first 16 games.
21. Hull Western Christian (16-2)
The defending Class 2A state runner-up saw their 10-game win streak end with a 77-55 loss to No. 3 Sioux City East.
22. Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln (13-5)
The Lynx lost two of three against two of the better teams in western Iowa, losing 54-47 to Council Bluffs Jefferson and 86-59 to No 3 Sioux City East before beating Sioux City Bishop Heelan 67-47.
23. Waukee NW 12-7
The Wolves have won five straight, garnering victories over Johnston and Urbandale,
24. Ankeny (11-6)
The Hawks split a pair of games, losing 67-48 to No. 5 Valley and beating city rival Centennial 76-63.
25. North Linn (17-1)
The Lynx debut in the rankings after beating a good Maquoketa Valley team, 57-44, and upsetting previous unbeaten Marquette Catholic 69-60. Ty Pflughaupt and Mason Bechen combine to average almost 40 points a game.
