Iowa high school wrestling state tournament: Day 2 results, team scores (2/15/2024)

Individuals secure semifinal spots, team races intensify

Following an opening day that pretty much saw the higher seeds advance, day two of the Iowa high school wrestling state tournament brought some upsets and highlight-reel wins.

The action took place inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, as Class 1A, 2A and 3A wrestlers battled for spots in the semifinals.

Wrestling continues through Saturday night with the finals and crowning of the newest state champions.

Here is a recap from each class from Thursday. SBLive will also continue to provide live updates throughout each day

2A: Osage takes back control at the top

The Green Devils quickly made their way up the 2A ladder, finishing the day with 62.5 points and a nice lead over Mount Vernon. Burlington Notre Dame, the overnight leader, fell to third followed by Creston and Glenwood.

Five Osage wrestlers secured spots in Blake Fox, Anders Kittleson, Tucker Stangel, Max Gast and Mac Muller in the semifinals. Both Fox and Stangel seek a second title, while Kittelson looks to make his second finals appearance.

Fox, Kittleson, Stangel and Muller had little trouble in the quarters, while Gast claimed a 10-7 decision over Caleb Seaba of Clarion-Goldfield/Dows to earn his spot.

Two of the seven remaining wrestlers for Mount Vernon are on the championship side in unbeaten Klayten Perreault and Jase Jaspers. The remaining five will need to earn a win on Friday to secure a spot on the podium.

Burlington Notre Dame also had a tough day, seeing only Carter West and Kaiden Dietzenbach punch tickets to the semifinals.

Perry, a community struck by the heartbreak of a school shooting in January, received a glimmer of sunshine when Kain Killmer earned a 6-2 decision and spot in the semifinals at 190 pounds. His teammate, Keegan Snyder, continues to compete on the consolation side.

Gage Spurgeon of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont knocked off top-seed Kaden Weber from Nevada at 120 pounds. The remaining No. 1 seeds all advanced including Union LaPorte City junior Jace Hedeman, who is seeking a third state title.

3A: Not even perfect round can stop Rams

Bettendorf went a perfect 6-for-6 in the quarterfinal round but remains a distant second to Southeast Polk in the team race.

The Rams secured eight semifinalists and have 116.5 points. The Bulldogs are second with 99 followed by Ankeny Centennial, Indianola and Fort Dodge.

Nico DeSalvo, Carter Pearson, Maximus Riggins, Logan Trenary, Abe Bushong, Brent Slade, Hoden Hansen and Cooper Martinson were all victorious in the quarters, while Mat Prine, Justis Jesuroga and Wil Oberbroeckling are competing on the consolation side.

For Bettendorf, Jake Knight, Timothy Koester, Jayce Luna, Cody Trevino, Lincoln Jipp and Brayden Koester are all in the final four of their respective weights with Duncan Harn still in the running for a medal.

Waukee Northwest freshman Carew Christensen knocked off No. 2 seed Braxton Hutchinson of Burlington at 106, 4-2. All of the No. 1 seeds advanced to the semis including three-time champs Maximus Magayna of Waterloo East and Carter Freeman from Waukee Northwest.

Magayna pinned his way there with a fall vs. Nic VanArkel of West Des Moines Valley in 4:18 at 175 pounds and Freeman scored a technical fall over Tyler Brennan of Ankeny Centennial at 138.

1A: Another day, another run by Don Bosco

Six Don Bosco wrestlers remain alive for individual state titles, as the Dons closed in on a sixth consecutive traditional team crown.

Don Bosco sits atop the standings with 95.5 points, as Hayden Schwab, Dawson Youngblut, Ethan Christoffer, Kyler Knaack, Kaiden Knaack and Landon Fernandez all advanced to the final four of their respective weights.

The other four qualifiers for the Dons can all still secure medals and more points towards the team race.

Alburnett, with four in the semis and six more on the consolation side, is second followed by Wilton, Jesup and Underwood.

All 14 No. 1 seeds took care of business and moved one step closer to competing for state gold.
