Iowa high school girls basketball state tournament: Solon holds off Dubuque Wahlert, 58-47 in Class 3A quarterfinal

Iowa signee Callie Levin scored 20 points in the win

University of Iowa signee Callie Levin scored 15 of her 20 points in the first half to push Solon to a 58-47 win over Dubuque Wahlert in the final Class 3A Iowa High School girls basketball state tournament quarterfinal Wednesday morning. 

Solon advances to play Des Moines Christian in the semifinals on Thursday. 

The Spartans (22-3) led by as many as 11 in the first half but only led 34-29 at halftime.

Wahlert (19-6) never led but tied the game at 39 with three minutes to play in the the third quarter. Levin couldn't muster a bucket in the period, but Hailey Miller hit two big threes, including one from the corner as time expired in the quarter to give the Spartans a 44-39 lead.

The final quarter belonged to Solon as they embarked on a 9-4 run and led 53-43 with just over two minutes to play to seal the win. 

Solon forced 18 Wahlert turnovers scoring 21 points off the miscues. 

Miller added 16 points for the Spartans. Kobi Lietz chipped in 11 points and three rebounds. Anna Quillin grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Wahlert's Olivia Donovan was dominant in the paint with 13 points and 11 rebounds Claire Lueken led all Wahlert scorers with 15 points, and she also snagged 8 boards.

Levin hits a pull-up on the break to start to possibly put game out of reach with back-to-back hoops.

Levin finally on the board with one of two free throws.

Lueken hits a layup in traffic. Levin missed a layup and is still scoreless in the second half.

Quillin gets the easy bucket to move the lead to seven.

Miller hits a huge three from the corner as time expires in the quarter. It was her second triple of the period. Wahlert double-teaming Levin and held her scoreless. Solon had difficulty getting shots to drop.

Wahlert has been more patient on offense and Donovan has dominated inside with four points. Levin is scoreless so far.

Wahlert scores four quick points to carve into the lead.

Olivia Donovan took a steal all the way to the basket, but missed an easy layup. However, she grabbed the rebound and kicked it out to Claire King, who drilled the a three-pointer to cut the lead to 5.

Solon has its biggest lead of the game thanks to back-to-back threes form Levin and Hailey Miller, respectively.

Wahlert cuts the lead to three but Levin answers with a deep three. 

End of 1st :Solon 18-11

Levin making her presence felt with 7 points in an an assist. Her third layup late in the period extended the lead to 7.

1st Qtr: Solon `14-9, 1:20

Wahlert's Claire Lueken got Wahlert back in the game with a 5-0 run and a three-pointer.

Defense ruling the day so far. Solon has forced three turnovers and blocked two shots but has missed three layups. Wahlet has missed two.
