Iowa's best high school boys track and field athletes: Meet the state's top sprinters

An early spring has allowed track athletes the opportunity to get some extra preparation in before the big meets start ramping up. 

Here we highlight some of the top sprinters in the state. This is not a comprehensive list as there are hundreds of outstanding track athletes in Iowa. 

Ryce Reynolds, Mount Ayr, senior

A five-time state champion, Reynolds looks to add to that total this spring before he takes his talents to Stanford. Last year, he captured the 400 and 400 hurdles, setting records in both, while also anchoring the winning distance medley relay.

Louden Grimsley, Sioux City East, junior

Stil just a junior, Grimsley continues to display incredible speed on the track. Before transferring to Sioux City East this fall, he  was part of winning 4x100, 4x200 and sprint medley relays last year at Lawton-Bronson, setting state records in all three. Grimsley also has two other relay golds to his resume.

Baylor Speidel, Lisbon, senior

Speidel anchored the state-record 4x100 relay last year while adding silvers in the 100 and 4x200. He also claimed medals in relays as a sophomore after winning the 4x100 as a ninth-grader.

Jackson Belding, Ankeny, senior

Belding set the top time in Iowa in winning the 400 a year ago while anchoring the runner-up sprint medley and 4x400 relays. He also took third in the 200.

Joshua Anglo, Johnston, junior

A super sophomore season was capped by anchoring the winning sprint medley while finishing second in the 400 and runner-up with the Dragon 4x200.

Alex Razee, Shenandoah, senior

Razee left Des Moines with gold in the 400 and after running the anchor in the sprint medley.

Izaiah Loveless, Iowa City West, senior

It was a strong spring for Loveless, as the Trojan speedster helped his team capture gold in the 4x100, 4x200 and distance medley while also placing second in the open 200.

Cade Sears, Harlan, senior

Sears followed up a productive football season by winning the 4x100 and 4x200 while finishing fourth in the open 100 and fifth in the 200.

Tiernan Boots, Lisbon, junior

Boots and the Lion 4x100 set a state record in winning the title last year while also placing second in the 4x200. He finished fifth in the open 100.

Braedin Zondervan, Carlisle, senor

Zondervan earned silver in the open 400 and was sixth in the 200. He also ran the anchor for the sprint medley that took third.

Will Ginter, Central DeWitt, senior

Ginter ran on the runner-up sprint medley and third place 4x200, being the anchor for both. He also was eighth in the 200.

Isaiah Johnson, George-Little Rock, senior

Johnson was second in the 200, third in the 400 and fourth in the 100.

Kaden Amigon, Columbus Junction, senior

Amigon had a big fall on the football field after placing third in the 200, seventh in the 100 and third in the long jump. He also ran the anchor of the runner-up 4x100.

Logan Fairchild, Winterset, junior

Fairchild showed his promise, placing third in the 400 and fourth in the 200 as a 10th-grader. He was also seventh in the 100.

Tyler Sickerson, Ankeny, junior

Sickerson is part of a strong group of sprinters for the Hawks, as he was fourth in the 100 and seventh in the 200. He also ran on third place finishing 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Colton Voss, North Scott, senior

Voss locked up a fifth in the 100, just missed the 200 finals and was part of two Top-8 relays for the Lancers.

Connor Welsch, Ankeny Centennial, senior

Welsch was sixth in the open 100 and helped Centennial place fifth in the 4x100.

Laderrias Shealey, Burlington, junior

Shealey should be primed for big things this year after placing eighth in the 100 while running on three relays at state.

DJ Vonnahme, Carroll Kuemper, senior

Vonnahme, a preferred walk-on to Iowa for football, was eighth in the 100 and qualified for the 200.

Will Howes, Central Springs, senior

Three Top-8s should give Howes confidence this year, including a fifth in the 400.

Lance McShane, Maquoketa Valley, senior

McShane was busy as a junior, placing fifth in the 400 hurdles, eighth in the 400 and running on the shuttle hurdle relay.

Quinn Street, Osage, sophomore

Street placed fifth in the 400 and ran on a pair of relays at state.

Josiah DeYoung, junior, Waukee Northwest

DeYoung was a multi-event qualifier while placing seventh for Pocahontas Area last year. He now competes for Waukee Northwest.

Chance Lande, Ballard, senior

Lande anchored the 4x800 to third while also placing eighth in the open 400 and running on the seventh place 4x400.

Tayden Ferguson, Linn-Mar, senior

Ferguson just missed out on a medal, placing fourth in the 4x400 and fifth in the 400 along with running on two other relays.

Zach VanWychen, Bettendorf, senior

Along with helping the Bulldog sprint medley finish third, VanWychen was eighth in the 400.

Ryan Leonard, Estherville-LC, senior

Leonard left Drake Stadium with a bronze in the 200 in 2A.

Jabari Woodbury, Garwin-GMG, senior

Woodbury got his feet wet by placing sixth in the open 400 a year ago.
