Louisiana LookBack: Top takeaways from Week 6 of high school football

Captain Shreve continues high-scoring ways of District 1-5A after upending undefeated Airline

SBLive Louisiana is continuing its new weekly statewide recap called Louisiana Lookback.

Now, with the second half of the regular season commencing, here is a quick look at some of the interesting developments that took place over the weekend.

1. Fireworks still aplenty in District 1-5A

District 1-5A has a reputation for high scoring games. Here are a few scores from last year: Airline 75, Benton 59; Benton 78, Haughton 71; Airline 55, Haughton 42.

The fireworks continued on Friday as Captain Shreve knocked off unbeaten Airline, 60-35. Jamarlon Otis carried 20 times for 244 yards and three TDs for the Gators (5-1, 3-0), who assumed control of the 1-5A race. Shreve stopped Airline's 12-game winning streak, according to Roy Lang of the Shreveport/Bossier Advocate.

The Gators, who have won four straight since a 61-27 loss to Calvary Baptist, outscored Airline in the second half, 39-14. The game was tied, 21-all, at intermission.

2. Raiders hand Patriots another tough defeat

Archbishop Rummel handed John Curtis Christian its second straight loss. Jaidyn Martin ran for all four of the Raiders' touchdowns in the 27-21 overtime thriller, a week after the Patriots lost on the final play against Holy Cross.

Martin rushed for 138 yards on 25 carries, including the game-winner from a yard out, according to Mike Strom of nola.com. The Raiders (3-3, 1-1 District 9-5A) held the Patriots to 119 rushing yards. Rummel has won two in a row following a 1-3 start.

3. 'Diesel' Powered

When will teams quit kicking to Cecilia's Diesel Solari? The junior quarterback returned the opening kick 92 yards for the first of his five touchdowns on Friday at home vs. Breaux Bridge. It was the third kick return for a TD for Solari, who returned kicks for scores in Week 1 at St. Martinville and Week 5 vs. Notre Dame.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-1 overall, and 1-0 in District 5-4A with a 49-12 rout of Breaux Bridge in the St. Martin Parish "Civil War." The Bulldogs are on a collision course with Opelousas for a Week 8 game at Cecilia that will likely decide the district title.

4. Stealing the Show

St. Martin's Episcopal junior tailback Harlem Berry is one of the most heralded prospects in the country, but Dedric Lastie stole the show in Riverside Academy's 55-14 road win over the Saints. Lastie, also a junior, ran for 338 yards on 18 carries with four TDs. according to nola.com's Josh Preston.

Berry rushed for 167 yards on 29 carries with two scores, caught three passes for 22 yards and even completed a 30-yard pass.

5. Announcing His Arrival

Travis Gallien has arrived. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore caught three passes for 104 yards, highlighted by an 85-yarder that opened the scoring in Teurlings Catholic's 38-14 win over Westgate in a District 4-4A opener.

Gallien also returned an interception for a TD for the Rebels (5-1, 1-0), according to Eric Narcisse of the Acadiana Advocate.

6. Airborne at Acadiana

Acadiana coach Matt McCullogh wasn't joking around when he said quarterback Caden DiBetta brought a passing component to the Rams' usually run-heavy veer offense. DiBetta completed 8-of-15 throws for 206 yards and three TDs as Acadiana won its fifth straight by downing unbeaten Sam Houston, 56-13.

The Rams travel to John Curtis Christian next week in a non-district matchup of identical offenses.

7. Jays' Johnson Keeps Running

St. Edmund's tailback Ke'Von Johnson added to his prolific numbers. Johnson, who entered Friday's game vs. North Central as the state's second-leading rusher with 1,079 yards on 141 carries and 16 TDs, spurred the Blue Jays to a 48-0 win. The sophomore ran for 264 yards on 13 carries with four TDs for St. Edmund (5-1).

8. Sharks Rise Up

Scoreboard-watching fans did a double take when they noticed that winless Comeaux led Southside, 24-7, at halftime on Thursday. The Sharks, who were celebrating homecoming, scored 49 unanswered points after the break to beat the Spartans, 56-24.

Fullback Ramon Singleton rushed for 103 yards on 20 carries with four TDs for Southside (5-1).

9. Chantz Taking Charge

Carencro's Chantz Babineaux is 50 yards away from setting a school record for career passing yards. Oh, by the way, Babineaux is only a sophomore, and this is his first year at quarterback after a record-setting freshman campaign at receiver.

The Bears stayed perfect at 6-0 by blanking Lafayette High, 55-0. Babineaux completed 12-of-19 passes for 353 yards and five TDs and rushed for two scores.

10. Dominant Defense

St. Thomas More's defense continued to shine. The Cougars, who shut out North Vermilion 56-0 in a District 4-4A opener, have allowed 65 points while compiling a 6-0 record, with 49 of those points coming in wins over Catholic-Baton Rouge and Alexandria.

The Cougars avenged their only 2022 loss by beating Catholic-BR, 35-28, while 14 of Alexandria' points were in the second half of STM's 49-21 win.

11. Crusading to Victory

Brother Martin's defense stood tall in a Catholic League battle vs. Jesuit. The Crusaders recorded two safeties and limited the Blue Jays to 94 yards of offense in a 15-3 win, according to nola.com's Chris Dabe.

Jesuit led 3-0 at halftime and 3-2 in the third quarter. Jordan West ran for 131 yards on 25 carries for the Crusaders (4-2, 1-1).

12. Newman's Got a 'Friend'

No Arch Manning, no problem. Isidore Newman isn't having any difficulties even though Manning, the nation's No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2023, has moved on to college football at the University of Texas. Quarterback Eli Friend ran for the winning score as the Greenies beat Belle Chasse, 20-14, to improve to 5-0 on Friday.

14. Milestones for Destrehan

Destrehan owns the state's longest winning streak (20 games). The Wildcats mauled winless Central Lafourche, 51-0. It was also the 100th career win for head coach Marcus Scott and the second straight shutout for the Destrehan defense, which has allowed only 32 points.

None of the Wildcats' opponents have a winning record. Bonnabel and John Ehret, its first two opponents, are both 3-3. The Wildcats host 5-1 Terrrebonne on Thursday. East St. John, which is 6-0, visits Destrehan in Week 9.

15. Tiger Sauce

Holy Cross rallied from a 24-20 halftime deficit to beat St. Augustine, 55-30, and stay unbeaten at 6-0. Ke'Rynn Smith's 6-yard TD run put the Tigers ahead for good in the third quarter.

Cole Canatella threw a 37-yard TD pass to Georgia Tech commit Koby Young to extend the lead to 34-24. Smith tacked on another TD run, and the Tigers scored two more times.

16. Overpowering Oak Grove

In a battle of perennial north Louisiana small school powers, Oak Grove rolled to a 61-27 win against undefeated Haynesville. Quarterback Jackson Bradley threw five TD passes and ran for two more. The two teams could meet again in the Division IV non-select playoffs. Oak Grove holds the No. 6 power rating. Haynesville is No. 4.
