BALTIMORE, MD – Archbishop Curley graduate Tyler Locklear, a key member of the Friars’ 2018 MIAA A Conference championship team, was drafted on Sunday evening by the Seattle Mariners in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft, after three outstanding seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Locklear, a third-baseman, hit .361 with 37 home runs in 132 career games with VCU. This spring he batted .402 (90×224) with 77 runs scored, 25 doubles, 2 triples, 20 home runs, 78 RBI, 6 stolen bases and 47 walks with a .542 on-base percentage and a .799 slugging percentage (1.342 OPS) in 62 games.

He is among the VCU all-time leaders in several offensive categories, including single-season home runs (1st with 20 in 2022), single-season RBI (1st with 78 in 2022) single-season batting average (5th with a .402 mark in 2022), career home runs (tied for 1st with 37) and career slugging percentage (1st with a .704 mark).

At Curley he was three time All-MIAA selection and 2018 Under Armour All-American. He was rated 98th by MLB entering the draft, but was taken 40 slots higher by the Mariners with the 58th overall pick.
