Top midfielders in Michigan high school boys soccer

Colin Robertson, senior, Brighton

Robertson was voted all-state second team this season for the runner-up Bulldogs. He was also named first-team all-region, district, county and conference.

“Colin is a remarkably talented player with a technical ability second to none,” coach Mark Howell said. “His ability to see the field and distribute in any way with either foot crafted most of our attack throughout the season.”

This fall was Robertson’s first with Brighton.

“Colin is a Division I-caliber talent,” said Howell.

Brady Hanosh, senior, Adrian

Hanosh scored six goals and set a program record with 17 assists from the central defensive midfielder spot in 2023. He was named all-league and all-district for the 14-8 Maples.

“Brady had games for us this season where he was the best player on the field and could control the entire field of play,” coach Ted Hanosh said.

Nathan Wojcik, sophomore, Adrian

An all-league honorable mention as just a sophomore, Wojcik burst onto the scene in the midfield for the Maples in 2023. Wojcik contributed 18 goals to the Maples en route to an all-district nod.

“Nathan is a dynamic player who scored some very big goals for us this year,” coach Hanosh said.

Jordan Klein, senior, Utica Eisenhower

Klein was named all-state first team as well as region, district and conference and a member of the Dream Team.

A Western Michigan commit, the midfielder was integral in the Eagles 14-1-3 finish.

Lucas Nay, senior, Mason

Nay was a key to Mason’s run to the Division II state finals this season.

A midfielder who has played high level club soccer his whole life, Nay, said coach Jacob Derby, has been a top player since his freshman year.

Nay was named to the all-state first team this season, after appearing on the second team last season and serving as an honorable mention as a sophomore. He is also a four-time all-conference and three time all-region and district player.

Alex Moeller, senior, Forest Hills Central

Moeller, a captain, returned from the Michigan Wolves MLS Next Academy to play high school this season and collected 21 goals and 10 assists.

An all-conference member and all-state first team selection, Moeller led the Rangers to a 16-4-1 finish in a stacked conference and a playoff run that ended at the hands of the eventual state champs.

“He was the heartbeat of everything this team did on the pitch, and an extension of the coaching staff,” coach Paul Kramer said of the Western Michigan commit.

Ian Hartke, senior, Fowlerville

An attacking midfielder, Hartke collected 15 goals and seven assists this season, earning all-league and all-district honors.

“Ian was the link between our defense and offense,” said coach Jason Sperry, “and was able to get his own shot and help set up others to make our team more competitive. He was a captain and his leadership led our team to accomplishments that our program has not seen in a long time.”

Garrett Pouget, senior, Anchor Bay

Pouget tallied 15 goals and 10 assists as a midfielder/forward this season. He was named to the all-state first team as well as the all-conference and district teams.

“Garrett is a very technical player and understands the game tactically as well,” coach Nate Williams said. “He loves to compete and loves the game of soccer. His physical attributes are impressive. Very fast, strong, good size, tough and physical. Garrett has an edge over his competitors because his mentality helps him perform better during intense competition. Garrett has that "it" factor and has shown it during many crucial game moments.”

Landon Smith, sophomore, West Catholic

In just his second high school season, Smith accounted for 13 goals and five assists for the Falcons. He was an all-conference honorable mention.

“Landon is our best athlete and soccer player,” coach Ryan Smith said of the multi-positional player. “He was our leading scorer, but also our best lockdown defender. It was not uncommon for Landon to play three or four positions in a single game. He played almost every minute of every game this season and didn’t miss any time because of injury.”

Diego Medel, senior, Oxford

Medel helped power a 12-7-3 Wildcats team in 2023 and earned a spot on the Division I first-team all-state when it was all said and done.

Medel joined teammate, defender Jay Cady, on the all-state team.

Lake VanderPloeg, senior, Holland Christian

VanderPloeg notched 15 goals and nine assists in 2023 and was named to the all-state second team after having been an honorable mention as a junior in 2022.

“He is a skilled soccer player as he helps maintain possession, skillfully navigates pressure, and brings a wealth of creativity to our team's offensive attack,” coach David DeBoer said of the three-year varsity starter. “He is a person who just loves the game and brings passion every time he steps onto the field."

Logan Mann, senior, Bloomfield Hills

Mann finished off the final season of his high school career with 11 goals and nine assists, operating from the midfield for the Black Hawks.

Coach Doug MacAulay called him a “hard-working midfielder with good vision.”

Evan Baum, senior, John Glenn

In a season that produced all-conference and district honors, the Rockets’ leader tallied a pair of goals and 16 assists from the midfield.

“The generator of energy from the start of the game till the end,” coach Kelly Wilson said. “He would be all over the place dropping passes to (our forwards) that would make you wonder where that came from. He is confident on the ball and in himself… A true leader on and off the field, he took on a huge burden of helping me with the team as this was my first year with these boys.”

Emir Tascioglu, senior, Northville

Joining defender Nick Settle, Tascioglu was one of two Mustangs to land on the Division I first-team all-state.

The Mustangs were among Division I’s top teams in 2023. He was also on MHSSCA Dream Team.

Hunter Meninga, senior, Portage Central

Portage Central finished 16-2-4 and Meninga’s play was at the forefront of the display.

Meninga was one of six midfielders named to the Division I first-team all-state.

Jackson Craft, senior, Rochester Adams

The senior was named to the MHSSCA Dream Team and he was one of the key playmakers for the Highlanders all season.

Adriano Shauya, senior, Troy Athens
