East Kentwood has hired Detroit King head coach Tyrone Spencer as its new head football coach, according to multiple media reports.

Spencer has won four state titles since taking over as coach of the Crusaders in 2016. Spencer won back-to-back state titles in 2021 and 2022.

“His proven track record of success both on and off the field fit in with our vision of educational athletics at EKHS," East Kentwood co-athletic Director Dave Emeott said in a press release.

East Kentwood finished 3-6 this season. Spencer and Detroit King went 7-6 this season, and the Crusaders fell 26-20 to Mason in the semifinals.

“EKHS is known throughout the state for the school’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field. I’m ready to get to work and build on the strong foundation in place to relentlessly pursue excellence in all we do with the Falcon football program,” Spencer stated.

Former East Kentwood coach Tony Kimbrough resigned after this season after 10 years as head coach.
