Michigan High School Athlete of the Week nominees

Jonny Ingalls, St. Ignace

St. Ignace’s Jonny Ingalls was stellar all week as he notched a double-double finishing with 44 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Onaway, 79-74, before posting another double-double as he scored 33 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead St. Ignace over defending D-4 champ Munising, 58-42, for the Division 4 regional championship. 

Jake Stephens, Chelsea

Senior guard Jake Stephens was lights out as he finished with 38 points, knocking in seven three-pointers to tie a state record in a win against Onsted, 75-53, securing the Division 2 regional championship. 

Ke’Shawn Fisher, River Rouge

Senior Ke’Shawn Fisher had a dominant performance as he notched a double-double, finishing with 34 points and 13 rebounds to lead River Rouge to a 69-47 win against Woodhaven for the Division 1 regional championship. 

Kelvin Torbert Jr., East Lansing

Sophomore guard Kelvin Torbert Jr. led East Lansing with a game-high 31 points in a dominating win over Portage Central, 82-63, to secure the Division 1 regional championship. 

Trenton Taratuta, Hillman

Senior guard Trenton Taratuta notched 40 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and two assists for Hillman despite falling to Bellaire in the Division 4 regional semifinal, 76-60. 

Gabby Reynolds, Holland West Ottawa

Gabby Reynolds led Holland West Ottawa to a 46-39 win over Zeeland West as she finished with 36 points before scoring 34 points to become West Ottawa’s all-time leading scorer in a win over Zeeland East, 60-50. 

Christina Dixon, Haslett

Sophomore Christina Dixon finished with a double-double as she scored 26 points while grabbing 11 rebounds to knock off No. 10 Chelsea in the semifinal in overtime, 69-68. 

Cece Arico, Detroit Country Day

Freshman guard Cece Arico had a stellar performance as she chipped in a game-high 25 points for Detroit Country day despite a heartbreaking 59-57 loss to Detroit Edison in the Division 2 regional semifinal. 

Kayla Hairston, Goodrich

Sophomore guard Kayla Hairston put up numbers all week for Goodrich as she notched 20 points to lead the Martians to a district championship win over Lake Fenton, 67-36, before finishing with 21 points in a 65-26 win over Armada to advance to the Division 2 regional championship. 

Jackson Froysland, Byron Center

Senior forward Jackson Froysland secured a hat trick as he scored three goals while adding one assist to help Byron Center secure the state championship win over Trenton, 6-1. 

David Schmitt, Cranbrook Kingswood

Junior defender David Schmitt knocked in two goals for Cranbrook Kingswood including the game-winning goal in triple overtime to secure the Cranes the Division 3 state championship in a 3-2 win over East Grand Rapids. 

Mathieu Chernauckas, Detroit Catholic Central

Senior goalkeeper Mathieu Chernauckas notched 25 saves on 25 shots on goal for Detroit Catholic Central to help the Shamrocks secure its fifth-straight Division 1 state championship with a 2-0 win over Brighton.
