The 2023 Minnesota high school football graduating class is a deep class with two 4-stars and 12 3-stars. The class is especially talented along the offensive and defensive lines with nine of the top 15 prospects in those positions.
Here’s a look at the top 15 prospects in the state, according to 247sports.com’s composite rankings, as well as where they are headed to college.
1. 4-star defensive end Jaxon Howard (Robbinsdale Cooper) – LSU
Howard committed to LSU over Minnesota, Michigan and Miami (FL). He is currently the seventh-ranked player in LSU’s class and the 18th edge rusher in the class of 2023.
2. 4-star offensive lineman Jerome Williams (Osseo) – Minnesota
Williams is the first of a run of commitments to the University of Minnesota, especially along the offensive line. Williams is listed at 6-foot-4, 295 pounds and he held offers from Illinois, Iowa State and West Virginia, among others. Williams is the top-rated recruit in the University of Minnesota’s 2023 class.
3. 3-star offensive lineman Greg Johnson (Prior Lake) – Minnesota
Johnson is a towering 6-foot-6, 305 pounds. Johnson committed one day after Minnesota offered him, according to 247sports.
4. 3-star defensive lineman Martin Owusu (Prior Lake) – Minnesota
Owusu is the Gophers top defensive lineman in the 2023 class.
5. 3-star defensive lineman Elinneus Davis (Moorhead) – Washington
Davis is currently one of two defensive lineman committed to Washington
6. 3-star running back Carson Hansen (Lakeville South) – Iowa State
Hansen led the Cougars to the 2021 Class 6A title and the 2022 semi-finals. Hansen finishes his career with over 4,500 rushing yards and 57 touchdowns, according to MNfootballhub.
7. 3-star offensive tackle Reese Tripp (Kasson-Mantorville) – Minnesota
If Johnson is ‘towering’ then so is Tripp at 6-foot-7, 315 pounds.
8. 3-star tight end Sam Peters (Maple Grove) – Minnesota
Peters missed much of the 2022 season for Maple Grove.
9. 3-star linebacker Alex Elliott (Hutchinson) – Minnesota
Elliott led Hutchinson to the Class 4A Prep Bowl.
10. 3-star defensive lineman Chiddi Obiazor (Eden Prairie) – Kansas State
Obiazor is the Wildcats second-highest rated defensive lineman in their class.
11. 3-star offensive tackle Grant Chapman (Anoka) – South Dakota
Chapman committed to South Dakota on January 25.
12. 3-star defensive back Garrison Monroe (Shakopee) – Minnesota
13. 3-star offensive lineman Trevion Mack (Irondale) – Northern Illinois
14. 3-star defensive back Devin Jordan (Eden Prairie) – Air Force
15. 2-star athlete Tyson Cooreman (Randolph Secondary) – Northern Iowa
Honorable mentions
2-star quarterback Jacob Kilzer (Maple Grove) – Air Force
Kilzer led Maple Grove to the Class 6A state title.
2-star quarterback Max Shikenjanski (Stillwater) – Minnesota
Shikenjanski is currently committed as a preferred walk-on to the Gophers.
2-star quarterback Cade Osterman (Elk River) — Iowa State
Osterman is the Minnesota Football Coaches Association Mr. Football for 2022, and he led Elk River to the Class 5A state title.
