Minnesota high school girls basketball: Meet the top guards

Top wings in Minnesota high school girls basketball

Myah Maull, junior, Eastview

Maull is averaging 11.1 points per game, 6.8 rebounds, three assists and 3.3 steals.

“She’s a complete hype girl for our team and when she plays,” Eastview coach Molly Kasper said. “She brings energy, smile and joy when playing. … On top of all of that, she does whatever the team needs on a given night.”

Emma Millerbernd, freshman, Providence Academy

Millerbernd is an impact player as a freshman for a team competing for a state title. She helped the Lions with 10.7, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game.

“Emma is one of the top defenders in the state,” Providence Academy head coach Connor Goetz said. She can guard 1-4 comfortably and holds her defensive assignment consistently 5 points below their average. Emma is also the second leading scorer on a top team in the state.”

Claire Stern, senior, Maple Grove

Stern is a senior committed to North Dakota State University. She is scoring 14.6 points per game with 6.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

“Claire is a team leader who is having her best statistical year this season,” coach Mark Cook said. “She can score. She sees the floor well. She is disruptive on the defensive end.”

Maria Fischer, senior, St. Agnes

Fischer is having a fantastic season for the Aggies with 10 points per game, 8.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists.

“Maria has been surging as of late in all aspects of the game,” head coach Tommy Boyd said. “Her all-around game powers the Aggies on both offense and defense. She has an uncanny ability to make her presence known at the rim off of her finishing abilities in the paint and rebounding abilities both on offense and defense. … Maria is another player that has played a major role in turning the Aggie Girls Basketball program around and into an 18-win team her junior year.”

Daviney Dreckman, senior, New Ulm

Dreckman is a 1,000 point scorer in her career. She’s averaging 16.3 points per game, 6.1 rebounds and two assists. She was an all-state honorable mention last season.

“Dreckman is the athlete that sets the pace and tone for our games and practices,” New Ulm head coach Julie Rogers said. “Daviney tore her ACL in the spring of 2021 but never mumbled a word about how unfair this injury was, but rather welcomed a modified role at practice while she rehabilitated her knee. Daviney's positive attitude is contagious and she isn't deterred by peers that aren't as engaged in athletics as herself. I wish I had more than just one Daviney!”

Olivia Olson, senior, Benilde-St. Margaret’s

Olson is one of the top players in the country. She is a McDonald’s All-American team member for 2024, and she is committed to playing at the University of Michigan. Olson can do it all at 6-foot-1, and she led the Red Knights to a state championship last season.

Aaliyah Crump, junior, Minnetonka

Crump is one of the top juniors in the nation as a 5-star prospect. Crump is a 26 point per game scorer this season, according to stats submitted to MNgirlsbasketballhub.com. She scored a season-high 38 points in a win over DeLaSalle on January 13.

Kate Amelotte, sophomore, Wayzata

Amelotte is an impactful defensive player as just a sophomore. She had six steals against Minnetonka on February 1, and she can run the floor and distribute in transition. She’s also the leading scorer for the Trojans at 15 points per game.

Ava Cupito, freshman, Hopkins

Cupito is just a freshman and perhaps another in a line of stars for the Hopkins Royals. She’s currently averaging 8.6 points per game, according to stats submitted to MNgirlsbasketballhub.com.

Pressley Watkins, freshman, Benilde-St. Margaret’s

Watkins is another piece in the Red Knights’ attack. She’s averaging 10.2 points per game as a freshman, and she’s one of the best players in her class. She can be categorized as a guard, but her 5-foot-11 frame makes her formidable at any position.

Jocelyn Land, senior, Holy Family

Land is one of the best scorers in the state. She’s averaging 31.5 points per game at 53 percent shooting. She scored a season-high 45 points in a game against Visitation. She’s committed to Butler University.

Alyssa Sand, junior, Albany

Sand led Albany to the Class 2A state title game last season, and the St. Thomas commit passed 1,000 career points this season. She averaged 17.8 points per game last season.

Mackenzie Visser, senior, BOLD

Visser was a star in BOLD’s run to the Class 1A state title game. She scored 18 points in the semifinal and 12 points in the quarterfinal.
