Minnesota High School Athlete of the Week nominees

Kam Hendrickson, Chanhassen

Facing an absolutely stacked Minnetonka roster that boasts nine division one recruits, Hendrickson was nothing short of brilliant. The senior goalie saved 44 of the 45 shots that came his way, finishing the game with an outstanding final stand to give Chanhassen the 2-1 victory.

Andy Earl, Chanhassen

While defense may have been Chanhassen’s strong suit against Minnetonka, the attack also made some splashes of its own. Earl was the headliner, scoring both of Chanhassen’s goals, including the game winner.

Marcus Matyas, Cretin Derham Hall

The Raiders may not be heading to the state tournament, but their section semifinal match was one to remember. Matayas had a night he won’t forget, one that included a game winner in overtime to give the Raiders a 3-2 win over Eastview.

Sam Harris, Mahtomedi

Mahtomedi faced Southwest Christian/Richfield with a state tournament berth on the line, and it was Harris who ended up being the hero in overtime. After scoring one goal in regulation, Harris one-upped himself, notching another goal early in overtime to punch the Zephyrs’ ticket to state.

Jannes Kamp, Southwest Christian/Richfield

Kamp may not have been on the winning end of the ice, but his performance is still worth highlighting. The senior goalie ended his career in a heroic effort, saving 42 shots and keeping his team in the game until the final horn

Broden Hontvet, Warroad

Another skater who scored two goals in a clutch scenario, Hontvet was dynamic as ever for Warroad. After notching his first goal in regulation, Hontvet put the game away in dramatic fashion, burying a goal in the second overtime period to advance Warroad to the state tournament.

Gus Drennan, Grand Rapids

Sometimes, momentum is all a team needs to pick itself back up, and Drennen was the spark plug necessary for Grand Rapids. Trailing 0-2 to a stout Andover team, Drennen started the scoring for Grand Rapids, burying one in the net to get his team on the board.

Seth Carlson, Grand Rapids

After Grand Rapids finally got on the board, it was all Carlson from there. The sophomore forward was outstanding, scoring two goals to put his team ahead, including the game winner in the second overtime period.

Joe Bertram, Edina

Bertram has had a career year for the Hornets so far, but his performance in the Section championship had to be his most clutch thus far. The goalie saved 19 of the 20 shots that went his way, allowing Edina to pull ahead and clinch a 4-1 win.

Bobby Cowan, Edina

In a game where everyone got in on the action, it was Cowan that held the team together with his versatile play. The senior forward notched a goal and an assist, propelling Edina to the state tournament for yet another year.

Gavin Greniuk, Elk River/Zimmerman

Elk River/Zimmerman punched its ticket to the state tournament this past week, and Greniuk’s effort in the net was a big reason as to why. The junior goalie saved all 24 shots that came his way, shutting out Buffalo for the big win.

Dane Callaway, Hermantown

Speaking of shutouts, Callaway and Hermantown strung together an absolute gem of a game to send his team to state. The senior goalie saved all 27 shots that went his way, giving Hermantown a 4-0 win and a state tournament berth.

Cayden Monson, Northfield

One of Northfield’s big three scorers, Monsoon was the one to pick up the slack this past week in the section championship. With the usual suspects having trouble scoring, Monson had to have a big day, so he proceeded to notch two points that helped Northfield secure a 4-1 win over Dodge County.

Michael Steward, Northfield

Usually, Northfield relies on a trio of seniors to score the puck, but this past week, it was Steward who stepped up. The sophomore scored two points on a goal and assist, an effort that helped lift Northfield to a 4-1 win and a state tournament berth.

Heath Nelson, Centennial

Centennial is currently having a historic year on the ice, and Nelson helped ensure it would not end at the section championship. The guy scored three points on two goals and an assist, a performance that helped advance Centennial to the state tournament.

Alvin Payne, Blaine

With the playoffs fast approaching and teams needing every win they can, guys like Payne help keep a team’s momentum running high. Payne scored 24 points, pulled down eight rebounds and had five assists, a versatile effort that helped Blaine secure a big win over Forest Lake.

Isaak Eenhuis, Annandale

Eehunuis has been a rebound machine all season, and one of his last games was no exception. The senior scored 14 points, pulled down 15 rebounds, assisted six passes and blocked two shots, an effort that helped Annandale clinch a big win over Esko.

Eban Lo, Minneapolis Henry

Lo is a pure scorer who can hurt a team on both ends of the court, and he ended his regular season in style. Lo finished with 28 points, four assists and eight rebounds for his team to cap off an excellent regular season for the junior.

Lukas Means, Redwood Valley

A lights out three point shooter from the field, Means had yet another signature performance this past week. The junior scored 38 points, including ten three pointers in a win over Springfield.

Tameron Ferguson, St. Cloud Tech

Ferguson has been one of the best scorers in the state all season, and this past week was no exception. He’s scored 41 points in each of his last two games, pushing his average on the year to 36.1 per game, the top mark in the state.

Justin Courneya, Win-E-Mac

Courneya is one of the big names across the state when it comes to scoring, and this week was yet another signature performance for the senior. The senior finished with 32 and 36 points across his last two games, shooting lights out to help his team push its winning streak to six games.

Carter Moore, Lakes International Language Academy

Moore pulls down rebound after rebound regardless of the game, and his last week included a 18 and 24 rebound performance, a pair of games that pushed his average up to 17.9 boards per game.

Maddyn Greenway Providence Academy

Providence Academy finished a 98-35 rout this past week, and Greenway was the headliner of such a performance. She finished with 30 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to keep Providence Academy’s offense churning.

Trinity Wilson, Lakeville North

Lakeville North had a big win this past week, and Wilson was the sparkplug who kept the offense churning. The senior finished with 26 points, a stellar performance that helped the Cougars get their 23rd win on the year.

Abby O’ Brien, White Bear Lake

In low scoring bouts, all it takes is one athlete to win a game, and O’Brien was just that for White Bear Lake. The guard finished with 21 points on the night, and thanks to her effort, the Bears won 60-41 over Woodbury.
