Chanhassen rolls Rochester Century/John Marshall in boys hockey Class 2A quarterfinals

The Storm get their first boys high school hockey state tournament win in program history

ST. PAUL — The No. 2-seed Chanhassen Storm (24-5) defeated the Rochester Century/John Marshall Panthers (22-5-2) 7-0 in the Class 2A MSHSL boys hockey quarterfinals on Thursday, March 7 at Xcel Energy Center.

Chanhassen pushed in the first period, and the storm broke through for the goal with 21 seconds left in the period. Chanhassen's Jack Christ intercepted a pass from Rochester in its own offensive zone, and he buried a shot over Panthers' goaltender Kyle Lappi.

"They're s super skilled team," Rochester senior forward Aiden Emerich said. "They're a quick team. They beat us with their speed."

Rochester generated more shots on goal in the second period compared to its output in the first period, but Chanhassen continued its barrage and broke through three more times for a goal.

Tyler Smith and Caden Lee scored even-strength goals, and Mr. Hockey finalist Gavin Uhlenkamp scored on the power play for a 4-0 lead entering the final period.

"I was really pleased with how they stuck to the plan," Chanhassen head coach Sean Bloomfield said. "The other teams going to compete hard. ... We knew that it would be tight to start. Really proud of the guys for sticking to the plan."

The Storm scored three more times in the third period. Micah Saxon, Jake Risch and Ryan McPartland scored in the third period.

"We really wanted to get three lines going in this game, especially with the goal of three games in three days, "Bloomfield said.

Chanhassen goaltender Kam Hendrickson had 12 saves. Hendrickson is a Frank Brimsek Award finalist, an award given to the top senior goalie in Minnesota.

"He's always dialed in," senior Jake Risch said. "He's really competitive. In practice, if you ruffle his feathers a bit he'll get agitated. He's really competitive, and I think that's what makes him so great."

Chanhassen will play the winner of No. 3-seed Centennial vs. Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday, March 8 at 6 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center.
