Minnesota High School Athlete of the Week Nominees

Joe Bertram, Edina

Bertram has been a rock for Edina all season, and his state tournament performance was no exception. He faced 34 shots, saved 33 of them and iced the state title game for Edina, who emerged victorious in the Class 2A championship.

Bobby Cowan, Edina

Cowan was the guy who scored the final goal of the whole state tournament, a feat worthy of praise in and of itself. The forward buried one in the back of the net in the third period, and after one final stand from Edina, the game was won.

Robby Hoch, Edina

Far from a usual suspect when it comes to scoring goals, Hoch ended up being the spark Edina needed to ignite its attack. The defenseman scored only his third goal of the season, but it was the biggest of his career, a goal that tied the game and lifted Edina towards its 14th state title.

Chuck Owens, Cretin-Derham Hall

Third place games usually don’t get enough press, but Owens and Cretin Derham-Hall had an excellent game. The Air Force commit scored two goals, and when the final horn sounded, the Raiders had won 6-3.

Max Anderson, Cretin-Derham Hall

Anderson’s most notable goal had to be the game-winner he notched against Centennial in double overtime, but his performance throughout the entire tournament was nothing to scoff at. He scored four goals through three games, including two in the third place bout against Grand Rapids.

Nick Hansen, St. Cloud Cathedral

One of the state’s premier goalies in the net, Hansen capped off his prep hockey career in style during the Class A state championship. The senior stopped 28 of the 29 shots that came his way, clinching a state championship for his team and finishing the season with a 19-0-1 as a starter.

Carter Casey, Grand Rapids

Not every team could finish their season on top, but even so, there were multiple memorable performances along the way. One of these comes from Casey, who saved 25 shots and allowed only one goal against a stacked White Bear roster to punch his team’s ticket to the state semifinals.

Andrew Dwinnell, St. Cloud Cathedral

Dwinnell was the glue that held the Crusader attack together throughout this entire tournament. The senior finished with five points across three games, with three of these points coming in the state championship.

Kam Hendrickson, Chanhassen

The Storm may not have won the state tournament, but Hendrickson deserves his flowers for playing an excellent tournament. The senior allowed only three goals across three games, eclipsed a .900 save percentage in each match and even had a shutout in the first round against Rochester Century/John Marshall

Joey Gillespie, St. Cloud Cathedral

Arguably one of the biggest snubs from the All-Tournament team, Gillespie had a dynamic state title game that arguably cemented a championship for the Crusaders. He scored three points on two goals and one assist, giving his team the spark necessary to outscore Hermantown.

Ben Norris, Warroad

Norris was another skater who had a gem of a performance in the third place game. The senior goalie was excellent, saving 34 of the 35 shots that came his way to ice the game for Warroad and earn them a third place finish.

Carson Pilgrim, Warroad

Pilgrim ended his career with Warroad in signature fashion, even if it didn’t end in a state title. The North Dakota commit scored three points on a goal and two assists, upping his season point total to 70 on the season as he helped the Warriors win 4-1.

Murray Marvin-Cordes, Warroad

Another senior who will be missed at Warroad, Marvin-Cordes had a gem to finish out his prep career. He scored three points on a goal and two assists in the third place game, which rounded his point total out to an even 60 on the season.

Dane Callaway, Hermantown

Callaway was one of only three goalies to shutout a team in the state tournament, and for that he deserves some recognition. The guy saved all 16 shots that came his way, a game that helped the Hawks earn a 6-0 win and earn a spot in the state semifinals.

Antwan Smith, Fridley

Fridley had a dominant 98-70 win over Princeton in the first round of playoffs, and Smith was the star for his team during this game. The senior finished an all-around performance with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Nathan Weiss, Becker

Weiss had one of the best shooting performances in recent memory. The sophomore was lights out from the field, making seven of the nine three pointers he shot to finish with 28 points and, most importantly, a win for Becker.

Sawyer Brown, Becker

While Weiss was the leading horse when it came to shooting, it was Brown that helped him get there. The point guard was a floor general from the start, finishing with 15 points and a whopping 11 assists that kept Becker’s offense churning.

Victor Nyabuto, PACT

Nyabuto and PACT Charter were excellent in the quarterfinals, finishing with a lopsided, 30+ point victory. Coincidentally, Nyabuto also finished with 32 points of his own, a focal point of his offense that helped PACT win 83-51.

Charlie Birk, Eagan

Birk and Eagan have had an excellent postseason thus far, and will be advancing to the section finals after an excellent game. Birk scored 23 points with two steals and a block, keeping the Eagan offense relentless in its pursuit for victory.

Liam Madigan, Eagan

Madigan and Eagan were against a stacked Rosemount team, and a versatile performance from the guy was a big reason his team is moving onto the next round. He scored 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and assisted eight buckets along the way to a 77-63 victory.

Ava Carlson, New London-Spicer

In low scoring games, all it takes is one athlete to win a game, and Carlson was the X-factor for New London-Spicer. The junior scored 15 points, and considering the game ended in a 52-42 win, that performance was likely the difference.

Maddyn Greenway, Providence Academy

Greenway is a name that tends to come up on these lists a lot, but considering how good she plays week-in and week-out, it is quite deserved. She finished with 35 points in the section semifinals, and when the final buzzer sounded, Providence Academy held a decisive 84-53 win.

Danica Martin, Mayer Lutheran

Martin and Mayer Lutheran had arguably the most dominant win of the postseason so far. Martin may have led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but the most eye-catching statistic was the 82-20 win Mayer Lutheran had over New Life Academy.

Tori Oehrlein, Crosby-Ironton

A 30 point game is a feat many varsity athletes never achieve, but Oehrlein pulled it off in a postseason bout. She finished with 32 points on the night, and after the game was all said and done, Crosby-Ironton was the 96-66 victor.

Olivia Olson, Benilde-St. Margaret's

Benilde needed a top tier scorer in the section final against Delano, and Olson was the one to step up to the challenge. The senior finished with a whopping 40 points on the night, and thanks to this effort, the Red Knights are moving on to the state tournament.
