Minnesota High School Athlete of the Week nominees

Anthony Smith, Hopkins

With a trip to the state tournament on the line, Smith was brilliant down the stretch. In spite of his team eventually falling to Wayzata, the junior point guard did all he could, scoring nearly half of his team’s points to finish with 31 on the night.

Jackson McAndrew, Wayzata

The Wayzata Trojans punched their ticket to the state tournament with a 105-76 rout, and McAndrew was the top guy for his squad, finishing with a whopping 40 points on the night.

Christian Wiggins, Wayzata

Another Trojan who finished with an excellent outing, Wiggins was the second fiddle to McAndrew, but still had an excellent night. The sophomore finished with 20 points, helping push Wayzata to the state tournament.

Mikkel Rawdon, St. Paul Academy

A 59-49 final score usually means no one player was outstanding, but Rawdon was an exception to this rule. The guy finished with 27 of his team’s 59 points, an outstanding effort that helped St. Paul Academy move on to the section tournament.

Ethan Carter, St. Paul Academy

Rawdon may have led St. Paul Academy with 27 points, but it was Carter’s support that helped this team win. He finished with 15 points, an important performance that when combined with Rawdon’s, accounted for over 70 percent of St. Paul Academy’s final score.

Jonah Moulton, Heritage Christian

If you’re looking for efficient performances over this past week, look no further than Moulton. The junior made nine of the 10 field goals he shot, finishing with 25 points and no turnovers on the night.

Abu Tarawallie, Heritage Christian

Tarawallie may not have scored many points this past week, but he was steadfast on the defensive side of things, and his performance helped Heritage Christian escape with a win. The 6-foot-3 junior finished with seven points, but led his team with 10 rebounds, a number that led his team and helped them escape with a 78-61 win.

Chris King, Mountain Iron-Buhl

King had arguably the most eye-popping performance of the week, finishing with impressive numbers across the board. The junior finished with 15-for-17 shooting, 34 points, four blocks and 20 rebounds, an unbelievable performance that helped his team escape with a 79-70 win.

Blake Femrite, Spectrum

Femrite and Spectrum may not have been victorious this past week, but his performance was one to remember nonetheless. The senior finished with 27 points, seven rebounds and five assists, an all-around performance that capped off an excellent prep basketball career.

Sam Hondl, Albany

Albany needed a star to punch its ticket to the state tournament, and Hondl stepped up nicely. The senior sharpshooter out of Albany had an excellent finish to the section tournament, finishing with 28 and 17 points in the final two games, respectively.

Marcus Marshall Jr., Minneapolis North

In one of the highest scoring games across this last week’s matchups, it was Marshall Jr. who finished on top of the stat sheet. The 5-foot-7 freshman was outstanding, finishing with 31 points that were integral to Minneapolis North’s 104-86 win.

Chase Christianson, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton

Christianson was one of the most efficient scorers in what proved to be a low-scoring affair for his team. The guy shot five-for-six from the field, finishing with 14 points, and more importantly, a 67-47 win for his team.

Alex Karschnik, Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey

In a barnburner game between two good teams, all it takes is one guy to make the difference, and Karschnik was the X-factor for his squad. Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey escaped with a 57-55 win in the section championship, and it was Karschnik’s 22 points that helped ice this win.

Patrick Rowe, Chisago Lakes

Chisago Lakes finished with 95 points on the night, and Rowe accounted for 37 of them, helping his team move on to the state tournament.

Abraham Souris, Hermantown

Hermantown ended up falling by a final score of 95-82, but Souris still had a game worth highlighting. The guy finished with 38 points on the night, an excellent final stand that helped his team stay in the fight until the final horn.

Olivia Olson, Benilde-St. Margaret's

Olson has been highlighted multiple times this season, and for good reason. She racked up an astounding 97 points across the three games she played this past week, finishing her career off with a Class 3A Championship.

Addi Mack, Minnehaha Academy

Mack saved her best performance on the season for last, capping off her junior campaign with a whopping 53 points versus Crosby-Ironton.

Angel Hill, Minnehaha Academy

Supporting Mack throughout the state tournament was Hill, who had an excellent state tournament in her own right. The senior guard ended her prep career in style, finishing with 33 points in the Class 2A third place game to give her team some hardware to end the year.

Aaliyah Crump, Minnetonka

The leading scorer throughout Minnetonka’s state title run, Crump was excellent through all three games. She put up 31, 27 and 23 points in the first three rounds, respectively. Aside from this and excellent defensive play, Crump also finished her season as a Class 4A state champion.

Tori McKinney, Minnetonka

Where Crump excelled at getting buckets, it was McKinney who flourished at pulling down boards. The senior grabbed 31 rebounds throughout the state tournament, eight of which came in the state title game to go with 18 points, an all-around performance that helped her team secure the 64-56 win.

Brooke Hohenecker, Providence Academy

When Hohenecker’s team needed her most, she stepped up to the challenge with an excellent performance from the field. She finished with 17 points on five-for-six shooting, an outstandingly efficient game that proved to be the difference, as Providence Academy won the state title game by only three points.

Alyssa Sand, Albany

Sand wasn’t on the winning side of things in the Class 2A championship, but she still had an excellent game in her own right. The senior racked up 29 points on 10-for-14 shooting and pulled down 17 rebounds, a double-double that was nearly enough to lift Albany past an excellent Providence Academy team.

Abby Hoselton, St. Michael Albertville

Hoselton capped off a solid state tournament performance with an excellent game against Maple Grove. She finished with 19 points on seven-for-eight shooting from the field, a near-perfect day that helped her team win the third place game 72-54.

Nolan Groves, Orono

Groves hit the third buzzer-beater of a section final game against Benilde-St. Margaret's. His was the game winner, and it was also for his 45th point of the game.

Pressley Watkins, Benilde-St. Margaret's

Usually, freshmen don’t have standout performances in a state title game, much less even make their varsity team. However, Watkins has been special all season, and her 18 point performance in the Class 3A state title game seems to be a preview as to how great of a player she’ll develop into these next three seasons with the Red Knights.

Izabelle Keaveny, Mayer Lutheran

Keaveny and Mayer Lutheran finished out their season on a high note, finishing as Class 1A constellation champs. During this game, the sophomore guard was excellent, finishing with 26 points, four rebounds and a steal to help her team to victory.
