Live score updates: No. 5 Minnetonka upsets No. 1 Edina in top Minnesota high school football matchup (9/12/2024)
MINNETONKA, MINNESOTA — The No. 5 Minnetonka Skippers (3-0) defeated the No. 1 Edina Hornets (2-1) 35-28 at Minnetonka High School on Thursday night.
The Skippers trailed 28-7 after an Edina touchdown early in the second half, but Minnetonka head coach Mark Esch still felt like the game was in reach even with Edina's proficient offense.
"We obviously started slow, but we never lost faith," Esch said. "We felt like we were wearing them down at the end of the second half. That’s what we told the boys in the locker room. We told the defense, 'If we can stop them, we can score when we get the ball.' It played out that way."
Minnetonka scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half as the offensive line pushed the Hornets' defense. Edina also lost two fumbles in its own territory.
"At the start of the second half, we started to bury them, and they couldn’t hang with us anymore, and we just kept scoring," Minnetonka running back Chase Conrad said. He finished with three touchdowns on the night.
Between the two lost fumbles, a missed field goal ettempt and a Meyer Swinney dropped touchdown pass, mistakes cost the Hornets in the second half. But the Skippers defense made the necessary plays, too, especially on 4th-and-5 on Edina's final drive.
Junior Minnetonka linebacker Alex Schneider read Edina quarterback Mason West and swatted the short pass attempt. The Skippers' offense ran the clock down to zero on its next drive.
"On defense, we made a lot of mistakes, and we’re going to get better and better, and in November, we’re going to be holding up that trophy with the ring on our finger," Schneider said.
