BROOKLYN PARK, Minnesota — The No. 1-seed Maple Grove Crimson (11-0) defeated the No. 3-seed Edina Hornets (8-3) 42-12 in the 2024 Minnesota high school football Class 6A quarterfinals on Thursday at Park Center High School.

The Crimson keep passing every test. They had an undefeated regular season, and they smashed the run-heavy Eden Prairie Eagles 34-0 in the second round. In the quarterfinal, they held the spread offense of the Edina Hornets to 12 points after allowing 35 points in a loss to the Hornets in the playoffs last season.

The Crimson are now two wins away from a state championship. It will be up to Mounds View, Shakopee, Minnetonka, Lakeville North or Anoka to defeat the No. 1 Crimson.

“If we play our ball, and just be us, I don’t think anybody can,” senior linebacker and fullback Bo Draheim said. “I think we’ll keep on rolling.”

The Crimson defense kept the Hornets off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter. Their defense played with vicious intent, both horizontally against Edina’s wide receiver screens, and vertically against the run game.

“Team defense,” Draheim said. “We swarm. I told the other guys, ‘We bury them in a pile of leaves.’ Everybody gets there. That’s what separates us.”

Edina has an offense that is different to most in high school football. With senior wide receiver Meyer Swinney and junior quarterback Mason West, the Hornets can throw the ball to every part of the field, and they do.

High school defensive backs typically have to defend only one or two targets a game, so the opportunity to play an offense that resembles something seen on Saturdays was fun for the Maple Grove defensive backs.

“I was waiting for this game all week,” junior defensive back Brayden Dozier said. “On Monday, I was itching to play. It was crazy.”

Dozier made the most of his opportunity. He had two interceptions, both coming in the first quarter to help the Crimson build a lead.

“They’re by far one of the better passing teams in the state, so I feel like I’m the best defensive back in the state, so I just have to go out there and be me,” Dozier said. “I had to get revenge from last year.”

Maple Grove will now face the winner of Shakopee and Mounds View, to be played on Friday, in the MSHSL semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium on November 25 at 7:30 p.m.

Another test for the Crimson, and another one they feel ready for.

“Everyone is a lot more confident,” senior offensive lineman Michael Wagner said. “Everyone has a lot more experience.”
