Meridian (12-6) nabbed the top spot in the MHSAA Class 7A Rankings, buoyed by an impressive eight wins over Top 100-ranked teams and three-straight wins over Pearl, D’Iberville and Petal to start the month of January.

Hattiesburg (18-1) was one of the biggest movers this week, advancing from No. 7 to No. 3 in the overall state rankings after the Tigers ran their win streak to 13 games with wins over Hancock and Terry.

SBLive’s computer rankings formula was created using its own linear algebra-based ranking algorithm inspired by the Colley Bias-Free Ranking Method. Colley’s Method was created by Wes Coley, Ph.D., an astrophysicist at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. He devised his algorithm in order to help address the subjectivity and controversy regarding BCS college football selections in the 1990s and early 2000s, using a method that used no subjective variables.
