Ash Grove caps off undefeated season with win over Salisbury in Missouri Class 2 title game
OZARK, Mo. – Bryce Davis and his Ash Grove teammates wanted to make history as the first baseball team in school history to win a state championship.
The junior right-hander and his Pirates teammates did just that on Tuesday night in defeating Salisbury 13-3 in five innings in the Missouri Class 2 title game at Sky Bacon Stadium.
The 10-run victory capped off an undefeated 25-0 season with the school’s first baseball championship.
“We wanted to be remembered,” said Davis, who allowed three runs over five innings, struck out five and walked two batters.
Brock Mooneyham, a senior shortstop, said: “It means more than anything in the world just to win the first team championship for Ash Grove. We’ve got a couple second places – but to win it is just amazing.”
The Pirates (25-0), who beat Maysville 11-0 in five innings in the semifinals on Monday, pounded out 13 runs on 10 hits on Tuesday night to give Davis all the support he would need.
“I hate pitching when I’m down,” Davis said. “Pitching with the lead, which basically I’m always doing because we always score early, it’s awesome having an offense like that.”
Davis, the Pirates’ cleanup hitter, helped his cause by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Junior second baseman Cooper Burks, Ash Grove’s No. 9 hitter, went 2-for-2 with three RBIs after driving in three runs in the semifinal win.
The Pirates scored 24 runs over nine innings in two games at Sky Bacon Stadium. They scored in seven of those nine innings and batted 19-for-46 – good for a .413 batting average – while also drawing eight walks and only striking out four times.
Salisbury (24-2), which had a 24-game win streak snapped, trailed 5-0 before rallying for three runs in the top of the fourth inning. But then the Pirates’ bats went back to work, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth and then three more in the fifth to end it via the 10-run rule.
“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Ash Grove coach Berrah Brown, who is also an alum. “Having Bryce be able to throw the way he did and not having all his stuff today, he just gutted it out. It was an incredible win for us. Our offense had his back. We were perfect – 25-0. We were perfect. I couldn’t believe it. It’s incredible.”
