District championships on tap for Missouri high school football playoffs

There are some huge matchups this week with the district championship stage of the Missouri high school football playoffs, including several SBLive Missouri Power 25 teams squaring off.  

Highlighting this week's schedule of games is top-ranked Lee's Summit North against seventh-ranked Rockhurst and No. 6 CBC, the two-time reigning Class 6 champion, playing at No. 10 Francis Howell, last year's Class 5 champ.

The Broncos’ defense pitched their second shutout of the season. The defense is allowing 14.8 points per game.

2. Liberty North (9-1)

Previous rank: 2 Last week: Def. Blue Springs 71-31

The Eagles fell behind early against Blue Springs before turning it on after the first quarter. Now they face Liberty for the second time after winning 31-7 in Week 2.

3. Cardinal Ritter (10-0)

Previous rank: 3 Last week: Def. University City 82-0

The Lions posted their most points in a game since an 82-0 win against Confluence Prep in the 2018 season opener.

4. Nixa (10-0)

Previous rank: 4 Last week: Def. Ozark 50-0

Nixa blanked Christian County rival Ozark for the first time since 2014. The next matchup is another conference rematch against Joplin. In Week 5, Nixa edged Joplin 35-27.

5. De Smet (8-1)

For the second time in the last six weeks, the Spartans will face Metro Catholic Conference rival St. Louis University High – after beating the Jr. Bills 42-13 on Sept. 29.

Zakiese Smith had a team-high 11 tackles and added an interception in a win over Marquette last week

7. Rockhurst (9-1)

The Hawklets are 5-0 all-time against Lee’s Summit North and are 3-0 in postseason matchups against the Broncos.

8. St. Dominic (10-0)

This will be the first meeting between the Crusaders and Fort Zumwalt North, according to MSHSAA’s online database that dates back to 2009.

9. Lutheran North (9-1)

The Crusaders will play Clayton for the first time since 2016 and will look to even its record in the series – currently 3-4.

Maddox Duncan made the most of his 12 carries, scoring three times in the win against the Lancers.

Ty Williams surpassed the 2,000-yard rushing mark in last week’s victory.

Last week was the fourth time the Falcons have scored 60 or more points in a game – and it has happened twice against Southern Boone.

The Hawks will face Festus for the third time in the past four years in the district playoffs – and they have won each of those meetings.

14. East Buchanan (10-0)

Previous rank: 14 Last week: Def. Brookfield 66-14

This Bulldogs will have a KCI Conference rematch in the district semifinals with a showdown against Mid-Buchanan. East Buchanan won 35-6 on Oct. 13.

15. Lamar (9-1)

Previous rank: 15 Last week: Def. Diamond 47-0

On paper, this may be one of the best games of the week when two perennial state powers clash. Adrian reached the Class 1 finals last year, while Lamar has 8 state titles.

16. Jackson (9-1)

Previous rank: 16 Last week: Def. Lindbergh 41-13

The winning streak is now at nine games for the red-hot Indians. Sophomore Drew Parsons had to come into the game at QB because of an injury and threw a pair of touchdowns.

17. Lebanon (10-0)

Previous rank: 17 Last week: Def. Branson 42-35

Senior Gavin Smith ran 19 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns as the undefeated Yellowjackets held off an upset bid by Branson.

18. Rockwood Summit (10-0)

Previous rank: 18 Last week: Def. Parkway West 42-22

Kamron Fowler had four catches – including two touchdowns – for 120 yards last week for the Falcons. Senior QB Grant Gibson and senior RB Elijah Stevens continued their record-setting seasons.

The Crusaders are 4-0 against the newest high school in Jefferson City.

After facing Big 8 Conference foe Cassville last week, the Indians face another conference foe this week. Seneca is 4-2 vs. Mount Vernon in postseason games.

The Northmen rallied from a 21-10 deficit and beat Staley on Evan Braxton’s late touchdown – snapping a 14-game losing streak against the Falcons.

22. South Shelby (10-0)

The Cardinals defense has allowed only 64 points all season and only two teams have reached 14 points. Bowling Green averages 60 points per game.

The Spoofhounds will face off against St. Pius X (Kansas City) in a rematch of a game that they won 46-42 and it is back at the Hound Pound again.

Quarterback Tommy Gibbar accounted for four touchdowns – three on the ground – in a week last week against Oakville.

Sophomore quarterback Rocco Marriott had four touchdowns last week as the Pirates won their sixth in a row. The only setbacks this year have come against No. 21 Oak Park and No. 11 Grain Valley – who they will play this week.
